Prof. Dutton is nice, articulate, and is enthusiatic about Vietnamese culture and history. But be noticed that he talks really fast. You're recommended to bring a recorder to record the lecture. There is a fair amount of work for the course. In addition to a take-home mid-term, take-home final, and a research paper, students are required to write a 1-2 page weekly reponse on the readings.

Other than homework assignments, Prof. Dutton is a tough grader. He expects a lot from students because of his enthusiasm about the topic. So be prepared to work hard for his class, but it will be rewarding and you will learn a lot about Vietnam.

Professor Dutton was an excellent teacher. His lectures closely matched the handouts distributed at the beginning of each class, and since he doesn't believe in exams, the workload was managable; 2 essays, a map quiz and a final. He is very knowledgable on the subject and is passionate about what he does. Go to office hours if you really want an A.
