AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He does NOT teach at all. He periodically writes incorrect things on the blackboard and fails to explain concepts. It is also very hard to understand him through his thick accent, but even if you do know what he is saying, it usually doesn't prepare you at all for the exams. The average for the first midterm was 82%, the average for the second was 46%. And I have no idea about the final because the final grades came out about 2 weeks late with no final exam scores either. I had to learn EVERYTHING from myself or my TA. I'm not terribly good at physics, so this was a real struggle for me. I studied my butt off and got a B+, which was such a relief for me. His grading scheme is also terrible. Each midterm was 25% of your grade and the final was 50%. Homework and labs were required, but did not count for points, which is outrageous in my opinion. It's essentially enslaving your students to do work for 0 benefit. He said you either do labs and homework or he would not pass you. I went to the physics department because lab has to be worth 15% of your final grade and they did nothing about it. I looked up his salary online and its over 250k a year, so he probably won't be leaving any time soon. I have friends who got A's by cheating, so that seems to be the only way to actually do well in this class... Once again, avoid at all costs.

What a shit prof. THE most uninterested lecturer I've ever had. Learned next to nothing from this man, ended up with a B+.... just take someone else. He's really disorganized and not interested.

I really loved Professor Gruner. He was by far one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. I'm currently taking Physics 6C right now, and I find the professor very difficult compared to Gruner! I don't understand all the negative views. His curve is ridiculously generous- 1/3 of his class gets A's. I find that he curves generously. The curve on his first midterm was fairly high, but the second one was round 50%. I pretty much thought I failed the final, but I ended up with an A in the class. I'm struggling in 6C right now because we have a new professor that makes abstract exams that are not based on solid examples we've actually seen before and give no practice midterms. I thought Professor Gruner was very fair.

He is down right awful! He is pretty much a liar too. "Extra credit" is mandatory. WTF?? Who does that! If you dont do the EC you drop a full letter. Bad lecture, bad class, bad professor.

Trust me as well as all the other reviews on this page when we say Gruner is literally THE worst professor we've ever had up to this point in our academic career. His lectures are boring, bland, and impossible to understand through his heavy accent (or speech impediment, not really sure) The worst part was that he doesn't even follow his syllabus he hands out in the beginning of class. Syllabus says homework does not count as a grade and that lab will count as extra credit. The last day of lecture before the final, he comes out and tells everyone that whoever didnt do the homework will get points deducted from their grade while those that did them will receive no credit. He also decided last minute that labs will count as a regular grade. All in all, he royally fucked those that depended on labs and did the homework later (as in after the due date) for practice. Goddamnit. Do not take his class. Wait till next quarter.

Gruner is quite possibly, one of the WORSE physics proffessors at UCLA. Avoid at all costs. I'm not sure what the users below mean by "he's sooooo easy" but if you're a not so great at physics like me (but are willing to work hard and self-study), this is not the class for you. He makes you self-study because his lectures are pointless. I didn't mind doing that, but when the concepts got really tricky and hard, it's kinda hard to self-study, nah mean?
Oh, and homework DOES NOT COUNT. He says that everyone does well anyways, so the grading scheme is basically: 50% midterm 1/2 combined, 50% final. It's like w-t-h. It's pretty sad that UCLA allows the same professors who don't care to teach every year....

Gruner is a horrible lecturer but he does post all of the lectures online which helps tremendously. Therefore, I never went to lecture and just studied the powerpoints before the midterms and finals. The discussions were fairly useful because my TA (devin) reviewed all the material in a very understandable way. Gruner allows you one 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper both sides as a cheat sheet for each exam (1 for each midterm, 3 total for the final) and you are allowed to write anything on the sheet so as long as you take the time to make a good cheat sheet, there is no reason for you to do poorly on the exams. You can literally write every formula and practice problem on the sheet. Study the practice tests he posts online because the exams are fairly similar to those as well. Overall I'd recommend him because it was an easy A.

Physics is a hard subject to teach. With that said, Gruner is a fair professor. His lectures are boring, but his tests are not difficult. (I stopped going to lecture after second week and ended up doing well in the class.) If you're someone who is good at physics or is able to teach yourself the material, I would forgo attending lecture. If you aren't one of these people, then makes sure you attend discussion and TA office hours because they will be lifeline for the course. The TAs are extremely helpful; they pick out the most important concepts and teach them well.
