You won't get many chances to take a class with a man who was a part of the development of jazz. He was there, he was a player in it. TAKE HIM. Yeah he brags and stuff but he's earned the right to and he's pretty funny. He even stood up against the TAs to help us get an easier final. He's a great guy with an accomplished career in music. He's like an 'ole jazz musician grandpa who tells you stories and plays music for you. It's fun and chill if ya ask me. Prof. Wilson knows his stuff and definitely opened my ears up to jazz and its many forms. He's an old guy, ain't gettin younger (can try to act young at times) but yeah, take him if you can before you graduate. I got a solid A in the class. Not hard at all. Midterm/Final are identifying instruments, musicians, songs, genres and also have questions from lecture notes and readings. The concert paper is easy and kinda chill. Just have fun with this class.
Lovely old man! I have fallen in love in jazz after taken Wilson's course. He is passionate, inspiring and extremely generous in grading. He wants his student to learn about jazz, to have fun and to get an A. Yet, attendance to lecture & section is necessary. The TAs are the ones who write up the exams and they usually throw in some materials related to lectures. Those are easy questions but are impossible for those who can't be bothered to show up, or to borrow notes from their friends.
Ethno 120B is a great class if you enjoy listening to jazz music like I do.
But I'm not sure if I'd take the class again.
It's not because it's a hard class...getting an "A" is pretty darn easy.
It's not because I found the material boring...I love jazz.
And it's definitely not because Professor Wilson is boring...he's really a very charismatic and caring guy...a true living legend.
It's because I'm not sure if I'd be able to deal with the all bureaucracy. I think if Wilson ran the class by himself, like he used to, things would've been better.
An attendance sign-in sheet for a 400+ person lecture? That's so high school.
A TA walking around lecture checking if you're doing the Daily Bruin crossword puzzle or IM-ing people on your computer? That's kind of anal.
If people want to fail, then why not let them?
I'm not blaming Professor Loza, I'm just saying that things should've been more chill.
It's a jazz class! Jazz is laid-back! It's not anal!
dood, Professor Wilson is the man. His jazz class is the best ever! After this class, you will love jazz, if you didn't before. He's got great stories about the greats. He knew the greats! He composed/arranged for the greats! Awesome! Just awsome!
