This class was super well organized and thought out. The homeworks are really nit-picky so you have to make sure that every homework is done thoroughly. The quizzes are in class but are easy if you go to lecture and take notes. Basically this class sets you up for success if you just participate. excellent way to get the GE out of the way. Strongly recommend dr. T!!
Professor Tobiason is probably one of my favorite professors at UCLA. Her lectures were very engaging and very fun! The workload is not too much but all of it is very interesting and easy to read! She is very welcoming and I wish we could have taken this course in person! She is such an intelligent and humble person! I would definitely recommend anyone take this class! The material is not difficult as long as you do the (manageable) readings for the weeks! My TA Annie was also awesome! Both very knowledgeable about the topic! Overall GREAT CLASS!!!
p.s. do not let the name scare you!
Great class! Most of the assignments are group work based but if paired with a communicative partner you are assured a good grade. Professor Tobiason is highly engaging and provides all the assistance you need to feel comfortable and supported throughout the quarter. I would definitely recommend taking this course with her and any other time she teaches a course you need. A great grade is very doable even during the COVID online sessions! (Pre-recorded lectures with live discussion sections) My T.A. Annie was also super helpful even if you didn't feel comfortable to do Office Hours via zoom. Slack messaging is heavily implemented and made it easy to reach both the T.A and professor!
This is hands-down my favorite class and professor at UCLA. Dr. Tobiason's research revolves around teaching professors how to be better at teaching, so it's no surprise that her classes are very engaging, organized, and straightforward. Each week corresponds to a different method, with small assignments each week to complete. You can sign up for a reminder groupchat, where she will let you know if a deadline is approaching, which is nice. The articles that each lecture is centered around were the easiest to read of all the articles I have had to read at UCLA, and she genuinely cares about her students and wants to get to know them. 100% would recommend!
Professor Tobiason is by far THE BEST professor I've had at UCLA! She was so understanding during our first quarter of online zoom classes due to covid, and adjusted the class a lot to account for this. She made the class extremely manageable in these difficult times, and was always offering to help her students. I felt comfortable reaching out to her and asking questions. I cannot say anything bad about Dr. Tobiason because she made me love this class even though I went into it expecting it to be boring. Take a class with Dr. Tobiason if you get the chance!!
Professor Tobiason is absolutely amazing! I took this class during covid and while lectures were pre-recorded, they were broken into parts with activities in between to keep you engaged. Moreover, she came into a few of our discussion sections and would teach us there too. There are group projects involved in the class, but my group was really really good (for once in my life) and the assignments only took 20 minutes to complete by the end of the quarter. We also had a slack workspace for the class and got to do fun stuff like share pictures of our pets and fun food that we made. It definitely helped with creating a class community. Also, Professor Tobiason was really good about responding to any questions on slack in a timely manner. Highly recommend taking this class with her!
I am so happy that I took this class. Dr. Tobiason really knew how to structure this class in an online context, so the online aspect of it did not negatively affect my experience at all. The lectures were meant to be watched on your own time, so I do not think that time zone conflicts would be a problem for anyone. All of the assignments were worthwhile, and I never felt like I was wasting my time while doing them. By that I mean that every assignment helped me learn. Dr. Tobiason and her TAs (I had Tom) are all very understanding and willing to help. I never felt fearful to reach out if I had an extenuating circumstance or if I needed some assistance. Amazing class. Would recommend it to literally anyone.
Dr. Tobiason is an amazing professor. The class was formatted with async lectures and in-person discussions with the TAs. Although there is a fairly dense reading load, the reading mostly consists of weekly research articles on specific questions being asked in the class. The questions and the articles themselves were all very interesting to explore and discuss. The class helped open my eyes to issues within education that I had never considered.
Something that made the class stand out from my other classes was the use of Slack. Dr. Tobiason created a Slack workplace for the class and utilized it to help create a community within the class and also provide students with an easy mode of communication between themselves and the professor and TAs.
The assignments were all easily understood and help further understanding the topics that we were discussing. There were multiple opportunities for extra credit throughout the quarter. Highly recommend this class!
Dr. Tobiason is THE BEST!!! There were 3 quizzes, weekly reading questions (RRQs), homework (done in R Studio) that you complete with your groupmates almost every week, one presentation (super short and easy), and learning check ins after each lecture. It may sound like a lot, but the way the class is split it is super manageable and not at all hard. She also is willing to move deadlines for the betterment of the class and everyone's understanding. Her lectures are straightforward, clear, and give you all the information you need for homeworks, quizzes, and learning check ins. She is more than happy to help, and the TAs were amazing and made learning R easier. They were also willing to answer any questions whenever my groupmates and I needed extra help. I highly recommend taking this class. As long as you do the work (which is super easy and manageable), you will get an A!
