I took the stats 102a during winter 2021, and currently taking 102b. Tbh, just take other prof if you can. Wu won't reply to emails, and discussion board. Also, for the first two weeks, we are just literally learning math 115a stuff whereas in his lec, he only talks about math concept rather than actual R coding.
It doesn't get better than Professor Wu. This guy is the nicest, most friendly teacher I've had. He was so accommodating with the whole COVID situation, but tbh he didn't even need to be. Stats 10 really isn't a hard class. You get notes during the tests and the quizzes weren't even timed. They are super fair when grading homework and labs and still drop your lowest grades. And seriously - Wu is the best.
Look, a lot of these reviews speak negatively about this class, and yes it is a very difficult class, but so are a lot of the statistics upper divisions. Professor Wu is extremely nice, and helpful, but the key to being successful in this class is to go to every lecture, and OH when you have a question. I had him for 102A, and 102C, got about ~40-60% on the tests, and still ended with an A. It is a super interesting class, and you do learn a lot. The exams are very hard, but the curve at the end is VERY generous to balance it out. The online quizzes he offers every week are graded based on completion at the end. He does this so you can do checkpoints on the chapters to see where you are. There are 5 homework assignments, and you have two weeks to do each of them but you can do them in two days. Overall, its a hard class, but I would take it again with Guani.
I envy the people who do not have to deal with the train wreck that is a Guani Wu class. You see the other reviews here. This class is so much more difficult than it should be. Wu is generally a nice guy but seems to be completely unaware of how to convey information and thinks it's sufficient to just go over trivial definitions in lecture slides and then test you on something that feels like it's not even from the same class. I had the misfortune of being forced to take him for both 102a and 102c and coincidentally both of these have been contenders for the worst classes I've taken in my four years here. I genuinely found stats 100c to be easier and more enjoyable which should add some perspective if you've taken that class. You would think after years of lecturing for the same classes Wu would be able to adapt or improve his ways or there would be some indication of self awareness on his part, but alas he keeps his consistently low ratings. This class isn't impossible but it's definitely not worth the effort that Wu makes it.
this man is genuinely evil.
The midterm and final were extremely hard. The average score for the final was a 32%. The tests seemed like they were designed to trick you and the problems were many steps and took a very long time. Nothing on the test was really conceptual and endless studying of the lecture slides were not enough because the questions are not big picture at all and rather very niche and expand on edge cases or details that were either never or hardly covered. There was no practice test and the test guide was very vague and often did not include material that was on the test. The homeworks, tests, and lecture examples were all extremely different so the learning of material was all over the place and never really solidified. The homework were very challenging although the TA pretty much went through every problem during discussion which were recorded. His coding was often incorrect however and it seemed like he didn't prep very well before the discussion. Overall, I would advise to take this class with another professor but I will say the curve is fair and the professor is very accommodating.
The curve on this class was absolutely crazy so there's that. Midterm and final class averages were extremely low but the curve, homework assignments and chapter quizzes help. Guani is a sweet guy and ok lecturer - he deviates from his slide deck in the second half of the class but you can still use it to study. TAs were super helpful with the homework.
I never leave reviews for professors because I rarely feel a strong connection with them, but Professor Wu was different. I struggled with attending class regularly, but never his, even though it was at 9:30 AM. His lectures are incredibly engaging, and our class felt comfortable asking questions out loud while he taught. He never made anyone feel stupid, no matter the question. On top of that, he’s a generous grader and curves fairly.
Assignments and exams are designed to trick you instead of help you learn. Seriously, I spent so much time debugging his stupid PQ numbers instead of learning object-oriented programming.
This class may have had great ratings and may have been "easy" for the most part but the exams were horrible. The TA's were great but no one was super helpful even Wu. He made a typo on the exam leading to the wrong answer and would not even assign partial credit for it. There are other great Stats 10 professors with no exams and that are super helpful. Wu's exams are hard and his class is extremely boring. If you can take another professor, I would recommend.
