I'm sure the entire class thought this class would be a joke after reading all these reviews (only thing that counts are the in class quizzes/tests), but judging from what the class distributions were, not everyone got the grade they would have liked. Averages were usually in the low 80%s. However, study the definitions and stay awake in class, and you'll get an A.
Schlinger himself is an interesting guy. He basically tells you that psychology is a bunch of BS and that the field has not progressed at all since the Greek times. He's very opinionated and it makes for fun lectures.
Hank is a great teacher. This is my junior year and he was one of the most effective lecturers I've had so far at UCLA. He's easy... he's very easy... because he doesn't want to trick you. He tell you exactly what to study and he tests you on that... no surprises. His lectures are entertaining and you will learn a lot. You have to come to class every time though because of his quizzes. Those are annoying sometimes, but they make you read the chapter before the lecture or, at least, familiarize yourself with the terms/concepts. The quizzes are very easy. There are also pop quizzes at the end of each lecture, so you have to stay for the whole lecture. Attending the lecture is a must because he often goes beyond the book. Just listen to him, and he says what you should write down. You'll learn a lot and this class will boost your GPA. Thanks Hank for a great class
He came in during the last few weeks of the quarter, which must have been hard for him. He tried to get us to think critically about the material presented in the class. His final exam was very easy. He's funny, too, but I often wanted to fall asleep in class.
Well, I only had him for half of the quarter and he had to teach from another professor's lesson plan.
BUT- I could tell that he is a very good teacher and is determined to get students to think critically.
He also gave us A LOT of test hints, so this helped greatly!
Had him for the second half of the course. His opinions, although different from the book, are very interesting and his lectures are more than just reiterations of the book. Unfortunately, he doesnt put his notes or lectures online, so one must attend class. For the final, he provided study questions. Peple who attended class, did the study questions, and the readings would be prepared for the final. Overall a good teacher, but it would be helpful for notes to be put online.
A wonderful professor I would highly recommend. His system of multiple quizzes and tests eliminates obsessing over grades and cramming for a mid-term and final that determine your grade for the entire class. Having so many little quizzes and tests means it's OK if you screw up on one (or a couple). You can really focus on his interesting and animated lectures and the quizzes and tests help you track your progress. You leave the class ACTUALLY remembering what you learned! I hope to have him again!
i don't see what all the hype about this professor is. I thought lectures were boring, and while its nice of him to try and pretend the class is smaller then 300 people, it gets so annoying when he "asks the audience" to guess the next word that is going to come out of his mouth. It drags everything out, and i agree with the peanut gallery comment from earlier. Sure, he is concerned with student learning, but i don't don't feel like he was an amazing professor, but it was nice not having a midterm or final
Always very fun and interesting. There are quizzes every class period, so it's not a free ride or anything, but there isn't any cramming for a midterm or final. I found him to be a great professor not because he was easy, but because he really cares about student learning! He manages to engage a class of 300, he jokes around, and he uses interesting examples. Great intro course.
Schlinger is the best professor here! He is really smart and interesting. Hearing him lecture just makes you want to get to know him so you can rack his brain. The way he sets up the class assures that you learn the material. Just study before the quizzes and it's not hard to do well. Also the material is really interesting so studying isn't too bad. If you want to take psych 10 make sure you take him, he's definitely the best professor for it.
Professor Schlinger is a real cool cat. He's knowledgable and a free thinker. His abilities are clearly somewhat impeded by the nature of big lectures at research universities; you get the feeling that you could learn a hell of a lot from him in a more intimate class environment. Nonetheless, he has fire in lectures; I am of the opinion that he tends more to indoctrinate than to try to be 'objective', but as long as you know that, you'll be okay. Jeez, that's what it means to be a college student, discriminating between points of view. What a ridiculous statement for me to make.
It's not as easy an A as some might say. I read each chapter a couple times in order to ensure that I would succeed on each quiz. You can get an A in his class, sure. But for goodness' sake, that is not the point. I think what Schlinger's done is take the focus away from students' neurotic obsession with grades and hopefully direct it towards learning. I learned a LOT in his class.
Bottom line: cool guy, thought-provoking lectures, NOT an A dropped into your lap, but that's not the point of education anyway.
