Winter 2026 - Professor Appel is super down to earth, easy to talk to, and an amazing lecturer. I can tell she's very passionate about the subject and extremely knowledgeable. The course material was interesting and digestible. The class has 1 blue book, 1 group project, and 1 final essay. All very easy and mangable. Discussion is mandatory.

Fall 2021 - Professor Appel is by far the most amazing professor I have ever had. I took her IDS 1 class last quarter and learned so much, definitely use her office hours and ask questions. She's very clear and really politically active. I have nothing but good things to say about her! The midterm was an in class written essay (4 question I believe) and the final was a group project. She's AMAZINGG....it was like watching a TEDTalk every lecture

Spring 2025 - I think all of the reviews on this class are way too dramatic, and for this class to have 1.7/5 stars is ridiculous. Concerning the workload, the various essays you are assigned are all less than 5 pages in length (double-spaced) and the instructions for them are very clear, Professor Appel even includes tips/recommendations for how to structure your essays. The final paper is 10 pages but is supposed to be a combination of multiple of your other essays, which makes it really light because you can literally copy/paste and edit a little bit. Concerning people's claims of Professor Appel only lecturing on her own opinions, I really don't think she is that guilty. Yes, she talks about social issues like racism and neo-colonialism, but these are prevalent topics when studying globalization from a culture/society lens. She comes from an anthropology background and perspective, which maintains an effort to consider all cultures as equally valid and important. If you feel that some cultures have superiority over others, well then yes, you may not like Professor Appel's discussions of the social and economic inequalities people across the globe face today. To the people who are saying she only talks about her own research, I believe she discussed it in the introductory lecture and went into more depth in one other lecture, connecting her research to our class concepts. This is not uncommon for professors to do, especially in the field of anthropology. The TA I had, Jonathan, was very helpful as was Professor Appel during office hours. If you are a Global Studies major who has to take this class and see it has bad reviews, don't worry. Concepts are easy, workload is easy, and professor is not unreasonable.
