Fan has been an amazing professor for 33B. The homeworks are reasonable, as well as the midterms which he prepares you well for. I barely studied for the first midterm and got an A on it. So as long as you pay attention in lecture then you'll understand the concepts and pass the class easily thanks to his clear explanations of the topics
This was the best class I ever took. I got a B on the second midterm and final, but still ended up with an A in the class. The professor was also funny at times and will try his best to answer your questions. You also don't have to even attend lecture as he does proofs that aren't even on the tests and it comes straight from the textbook.
Make sure you have a basic knowledge of Calculus before you take this class because he doesn't really explain things well. You don't really need to attend lecture because he posts his notes on CCLE. Homework is light, and the midterms are pretty fair except for the last "challenge" question. Professor says that the "challenge" question is only worth 5 points, but that's literally 10% of the midterm that I get 0 on. Even the TA's think the question is unfair, but at least the professor curves really nicely. I got a C- on the second midterm and a B on the final and still ended with an A.
His lectures are terrible (half of the time he was just mumbling to himself, and aside from that the class was cramped and if you couldn't get a front row seat you couldn't see shit), but the midterms were dead easy (the median on the second midterm was a 98%) and the final wasn't bad either. I mostly relied on the textbook and my TA, because the lectures were impossible to follow. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you have a choice, but if you do take him, learn from the textbook and you'll do fine.
It is a solid class. Haofei knows his stuff and so teaches the material that he knows we need to know.
He did not go over related rates or optimization which I assume where part of the curriculum. Instead, we had a significant amount of work with proofs which for higher mathematics is required. I thought that was really cool.
Overall, a good time.
At first I didn’t like the prof. But then I didn’t do so great on the midterms and he really really helped me out! I am so grateful to have had him as my prof. I ended up not needing math 31a and instead I’m going to the life science series because I don’t really understand theory. SUPER IMPORTANT: do the homework!! To study for the midterms, do the homework again and the questions surrounding them. He sometimes uses the questions in the textbook/very very similar to them.
