Having taken Calc BC in high school, most of the material was already covered so I felt as if I had a solid base understanding of the content covered in the class. However, I felt as if Haoren at times did make understanding the material more challenging than need be with his style of teaching. His lectures were very organized, with easy-to-read notes that were easy to follow, but his delivery often felt short as he often used textbook terminology to describe the concepts instead of truly making them easier to understand. Despite his shortcomings as a lecturer, I truly do believe that he wants his students to excel in the class as if you need help with any of the homework problems, he is more than happy to go through them during his office hours.
I thought that Haoren's midterms and final were reasonable and were of comparable difficulty to homework problems and the practice midterms. I received a 82% on the first midterm, a 91% on the second one, and a 90% on the final and ended up with an A, so all in all, as long as you fully understand the homework problems and attend office hours as need be, you'll be able to find success in this class.
Haoren was not helpful when it came to understanding content. Most of the material you will have to learn on your own with little to no clarification from Xiong. His lectures often over complicate rather easy concepts, compared to an outside source, such as a YouTube video, might explain the topic. Midterms were nothing similar to the practice and often focus on smaller concepts not focused on in lecture. Both Midterms had a class average barely over 70%, with most people finding the same struggles. However, the work load was not too overwhelming, with about 10 homework problems a week. I would not recommend Xiong as a 31B professor unless you are ready to spend lots of hours teaching yourself.
Xiong is a terribly unfair professor who does not teach well enough and has incredibly hard tests. In lecture he mostly goes over proofs and very basic examples. The material itself is already pretty difficult and Xiong makes it even harder. One of the very few good things about his lectures are that they are recorded and his notes are posted. The workload honestly isn't bad but they do not compare to the tests which are exponentially harder and often times contain material that was barely ever mentioned. The only thing that got me through this class was my TA. DO NOT take this class with Xiong. Try to get another professor if you can.
Would not recommend taking this class with Xiong, especially if you do not have any background with Calc 2. His lectures are unengaging and he explained concepts in an overly complicated way. He is not helpful at all, so expect to self-study majority of the material. The workload was manageable as he assigns about 10 questions from the textbook about every other week, however these problems are all graded on accuracy and are worth 15% of your grade. The midterms were difficult given that we only had an hour to complete them, but I would say they were somewhat similar to the practice tests he gave us. The final was just absurd and the questions did not reflect anything we had done in the class. He curved the class, but this class was one of the worst classes I've taken at UCLA. If you want to succeed, attend TA Karthik's sections and watch Organic Chemistry Tutor's videos.
As someone who has usually enjoyed math before taking 31b with Xiong, I never wanna experience an environment like this ever again. The practice midterms and finals were completely irrelevant to the actual exams themselves. Lectures became a joke as it was almost impossible to understand a monotonic voice and heavy accent. The concepts themselves being taught in class were not understandable and complete different to the homework assigned. If you want a.real math professor for 31b just stick with ochem tutor and khan academy. Only reason I passed fr was cause of these goats. On all of westwood and odh don’t take this class with xiong.
