Having taken Calc BC in high school, most of the material was already covered so I felt as if I had a solid base understanding of the content covered in the class. However, I felt as if Haoren at times did make understanding the material more challenging than need be with his style of teaching. His lectures were very organized, with easy-to-read notes that were easy to follow, but his delivery often felt short as he often used textbook terminology to describe the concepts instead of truly making them easier to understand. Despite his shortcomings as a lecturer, I truly do believe that he wants his students to excel in the class as if you need help with any of the homework problems, he is more than happy to go through them during his office hours.

I thought that Haoren's midterms and final were reasonable and were of comparable difficulty to homework problems and the practice midterms. I received a 82% on the first midterm, a 91% on the second one, and a 90% on the final and ended up with an A, so all in all, as long as you fully understand the homework problems and attend office hours as need be, you'll be able to find success in this class.

Despite being a difficult class, Haoren was helpful and clearly wanted us to succeed. He gave us a few extra credit points on the final for filling out his instructor review survey, bumped final grades up a half letter grade (from B+ to A-, etc.), and held several additional office hours during exam weeks. Definitely go to office hours, as he answers questions about homework sets in detail. In lecture, Haoren wasn't always the most clear, and I would often leave more confused than had I just read the textbook (all of his lecture material comes from the textbook). However, it was his first quarter teaching, and he got progressively better throughout the quarter. As far as exams, they were relatively fair. I thought midterm 1 was the easiest, midterm 2 was the hardest, and the final was in between those two in difficulty. Overall, I recommend taking 31B with Haoren, especially compared to horror stories I've heard of other professors.

A little hard to understand Prof Xiong's accent but you get used to it. The midterm and final were all similar to the practice ones he gave us. Overall I found the class pretty good and liked it. I would recommend taking it with Prof Xiong

This class is hard, obviously, but I loved haoren. He was so funny and clearly cared about us and our learning. There was weekly (ish) homework that he usually went over in office hours which was a little tricky, but if you asked him to go over it he would. The lectures were basically textbook, but he used some new examples and explained a bit better than the textbook. There were 2 midterms, one could be dropped if it helped your grade, and he gave us practice midterms that were extremely similar to the actual midterm. He did review sessions on the weekend before finals and all office hours and lectures were recorded. I got 80% on the first midterm, 86% on the second, and a 72% on the final. Grade was a B- in the end and it was curved to a B. If you are taking this class I would highly recommend haoren especially after hearing stories from my friends with other 31b professors.
