When it comes to lower division introductory classics courses, I would not recommend Professor Wood. Rather than offering a broad overview of greek civilization, she would lecture us on very specific topics. It was more of an analysis of classical greek literature, than a civilization course. Much of what she lectured on was also very opinionated, and sadly, her lecture style was extremely boring. She stood infront of the class for an hour and a half and talked. I had never dreaded going to a Classics lecture until this class. I've taken 2 prior Classics courses (20 and 30) and this was by far the worst. She would often have to stop class and tell people to wake up. I just don't think she's the right person to be teaching an introductory classics course.

this woman thinks she's teaching an upper division classics class. i admire the fact that she's trying to raise the bar on introductory greek classics class, but COME ON. she over analyzes things and makes the wonderful subject of classical greece painful. i sit in her lectures and become incredibly frustrated with what she has to say. The purpose of the class is to give students background knowledge on ancient greece which they can develop in upper division classes, but i don't feel like i've learned any background material on the time period. i'm struggling through the class even though i've already taken several greek history classes that i thoroughly enjoyed. her tests are really easy and easy to prepare for. the one required paper had the worst topics, again over-analyzing and reading into too many things. i would recommend professor wood if she would tone down her opinion and generalize this course into an INTRODUCTORY COURSE, as it should be. but until then, i HIGHLY discourage taking this professor.
