Fall 2024 - Professor Ju Hee is an absolutely amazing teacher who cares about each of her students education through the Korean language with great aptitude. I believe if everyone had a professor like her they would not only learn Korean to great mastery but enjoy the process and work that it would take to get to that level. Although there were days that I wasn't feeling the best she consistently noticed and chose not to call on me to participate in the class. If I was brimming with the lesson we just learnt then she knew I was ready to share what I know with the class. If Professor Ju Hee isn't a tenured professor for the Korean language yet, I don't know who else could be.

Fall 2018 - As someone who could barely speak any Korean before taking this class, I am so glad to have taken this class with Professor Ju. She really cares about her students, and in my opinion, is quite good at teaching Korean. While the pacing of this class did feel too fast at some points, Professor Ju did her best to make sure we were learning as well as we could, and she even adjusted the way she taught based on student feedback. Just a heads up, this class can be chill, but you do have to put in work and effort. Each lecture and discussion attendance is worth points, and there are usually either vocab quizzes or homework assignments for every discussion, so as long as you stay on top of everything, this class should be a great experience for you. Totally recommend

Winter 2024 - Professor Ju was a very kind and funny professor. As a lecturer, she was engaging, but it was a bit fast as there is a lot of content to go through in the course so I think it kind of had to be that way. The discussions are much better-paced. The class environment was friendly and comfortable, starting each day with a song. Ju and the TA will know your name and will call on you randomly, so be prepared for that. Participation and attendance are mandatory for your grade, but if you miss a class, you can turn in the in-class worksheet for attendance. Grading-wise, as long as you participate and turn in your weekly assignments, you'll get an A. The midterm and final always have a practice test and a lot of the questions are ones you've already seen. Between Im/Mitsunaga (the other beginning Korean prof.) and Ju, Im is more organized in her lectures, but slightly less engaging. Ju is less organized in her lecture style, but more engaging. Both are great choices, it just depends on your learning style!

Winter 2022 - This is my 5th time taking Ju Hee 선생님 as the professor for Korean. I'm not native Korean, so I was initially really nervous about being able to cope, but this course is very intuitively structured and has numerous ways to practice and understand the nuances of the language beyond just learning the grammar. I would say, it's a big time commitment. I had more homework for this class than I did for any other classes I took this quarter, spending around 4-5 hours a week just on homework. But I think this is true for every language class, and comparatively this is much easier. The course is structured with 18% being homework and 18% forum assignments (targeted activities using the grammar patterns for the week), 10% attendance (mandatory and very strict), 25% tests, 4% oral interview, and 20% final project.
