With little to no background in Italian and Spanish, I took Italian 1 to begin my language requirement thinking it would entail the basics of Italian. For the most part, it was. But Truong is a complete mess. She means well and often extends deadlines if people struggle to complete assignments, but her availability is slim and she disregards students who can't keep up with her pace (which is somewhat fast). She would constantly email random new assignments that are due as early as a few hours before class, so you need to check your emails often. The homework and tests are easy, she just wasn't an enjoyable professor. Would not recommend.
Having no background in Italian, I struggled in this class all quarter. Every class is taught in strictly Italian and at a very fast pace – which is understandable since there's so much to cover in so little time! Professor Truong does a great job of engaging her students with the material while teaching, making learning a new language slightly more enjoyable. She is very helpful and genuinely cares about her students. She goes out of her way to make sure that all of her students are doing well and offers advice/tips throughout the quarter that can boost your grade. & Although the amount of work she assigns for this class is a lot, she forces you to actually practice and learn the material which is something I appreciated.
Hoang is so incredibly nice. She's very thorough in her explanations and can laugh along/acknowledge when we're all confused by a complicated new topic. I really feel that she diffused a lot of the tension that comes along with the randomly-calling-on of most language classes by keeping everything with the whole group. Generous with partial credit too, so as long as you go to class, exams are ok! Overall, take her. A very kind and thoughtful person
If you can take this class with another professor, DO IT. I dreaded going to class every week. All we do in class is go through the textbook exercises, which gets so boring and repetitive, and the textbook isn't very helpful anyways. She moves through the material way too fast and covers it in a way that is hard to understand. If you don't have hours to spend practicing on your own each week, don't bother taking it with this professor.
Definitely would recommend! The class is just the basics for italian like learning any other language. Your grade is based on participation by going to class and talking in breakout rooms. Homework was done on cengage which is a little pricey but all the material is there and is mandatory. The homework was due almost every other day, which personally helped me stay on track. There's also 3 compositions which is basically just mini essays/narratives, you turn in a first draft which is 50% of your grade, and a second draft which is the other 50. There is also 3 quizzes that you take with respondus and is really no big deal, but there are also practice quizzes to take before the actual quiz. The questions on the practice quizzes are the exact same on the actual quiz. There is a final exam but it's basically the same as the quizzes.
Professor Truong herself is great! She's very kind and considerate with most things. At most I think she just wants her students to participate. The entire class is easy points as long as you actually try.
This class was awesome! I originally signed up because I couldn't get into Spanish, but honestly it's been a great experience. Italian is a fun language and has lots of interesting culture, which you also get to learn about in this class. Prof Truong is the sweetest lady and really cares about the students and is passionate about the language. You do the Mindtap homework, then come to class and primarily do breakout room activities, which I found to be fun. It's very engaging and is better than having to sit through a lecture. If you're considering trying Italian or just want a fun GE, definitely take this class!
