他妈的, i totally agree he is the toughest professor in Eco department base on rating. the class is interesting but the exam is diverse. I got 20 out of 100 in the midterm and 40/100 in final, even i am a smart person. after curving, i end up a B-. 屌! say good bye to business eco

worst professor ever! I learned all the material myself and got an A in that class.
i went to his lectures on the first and the second week and decided to ditch rest of the classes because the lectures were totally pointless. you have to spend a lot of time studying and do all his past midterms and finals over and over again to understand the material.i regret taking 171 with him.

He isn't that bad. The topic itself is very interesting, if you're into applied micro. People tend to complain because his tests are so hard, but he makes up for it by letting us use "cheat-sheets", and the curve is very generous. I ended up with an A+ in the class, by knowing what to study. Just go over his old exams and problem sets repeatedly, as he's likely to reuse some problems from them. Hell, for the short answer parts, I would just copy down answers from previous exams and get lucky when they showed up on his midterms. He's also very generous with assigning partial credit (during the final, he told us that if we couldn't solve a problem, just outline the steps we would take to get some credit). If you take the time to get to know him in office hours, you'll see that he's actually a very well known expert in what he does.

course material is hard, but the curve is generous. just make sure you do the past midterms and finals again and again. to the person below me, i wonder how smart are you? as i know the mean is about 40 something, and there are decent amount of students who get 60 and above

THE WORST ever...
just dont take this guy.. just dont... you will thank me at the end if you listen.
his tests are just ridiculously hard and his study questions and lecture notes are extremely difficult to comprehend.
Avoid this guy at all cost.

Worst teacher/class at UCLA I have ever taken. Tests are super hard, not because he is a good teacher with hard tests, but because he is a terrible teacher so the tests are basically in a foreign language. I got a 54/100 on the first midterm and a 31/100 on the second. The average on both tests was around a 47/100, you get to drop the lower of the 2 scores. Havent taken the final yet so I dont know what I'll end up with but honestly the worst class at UCLA period. The class will leave you feeling like you shouldn't be an economics major.

Hugo is a nice person and very approachable. I do not think he is harder than McDevvit, but he definitely have much better curve than the former. We do need to study for the class. I get a A- in the class only because I made a whole bunch of mistakes in the midterm. We can drop one midterm two. I did not buy the book and did not go to any lectures. However, I did study the problem set posted on line. It is not that hard to get a A+.

I spent most of the time in the final week to study the materials in this course and ended up with a B+, the most difficult exam I ever taken, though his lecture is pretty interesting.

I don't know why this professor is getting such low scores, honestly. I was quite surprised to see that he is ranked the most difficult professor on all of bruinwalk. I find his lectures interesting, and he has a rather endearing presence. He made me care about a subject I wouldn't have been interested in otherwise. He also offered us a paper at the end of the quarter if we were interested in bringing up our grades. He seems to really care about your grasp of the material. He even offered me and another student his cell phone number so he could help us with a class "game." I will say that his tests are extremely difficult. I wish he'd go over material this difficult in his lectures. However, his curve in generous, so you'll probably be okay. I got an A- in his class, and I almost read 4 pages of the book. However, I did listen closely in class and review the class notes. If you want to do well on his tests, going over past midterms and finals is crucial!
