The class consists of all slides with no context. Just the picture, year, and location excavated. The exam for this class requires you to memorize about 100 of the described above (and its only worth 30%). Not worth going to class and lots of reading per week. I'm a chemical engineering major and this is my busiest class.. such useless memorization and a waste of time.

Quarter: Winter 2016

Pretty hard. Should have just done the readings and not gone to class. The lectures were hard to follow and although they were put online, they were not useful to go back and refer to. Most of the material was in the reading, only a little bit was vaguely covered in class.

Couldn't understand the second professor (Lee); she was very quiet, had a strong accent, and did not put together slides that were easy to glean information from.

Made me start smoking again tbh.

Okay if you are a stem major, save yourself the time and misery and do not take this class. I was able to get an A+ in this class, but only because I spent hours studying material that will be absolutely useless to me in the future. This class had two professors, with Dr. Von Faulkerson teaching the first half of the quarter and Lee teaching the remaining half. Lectures were bearable during the first half when lecture slides were posted in advance, but when Lee started, she stopped posting slides in advance and the lectures were almost impossible to follow. Everything felt very unorganized, and the lecture hall got more and more empty as the quarter went on. I wish I could say the boring lectures were the worst part of this class, but unfortunately the tests were insane and required HOURS worth of preparation. For the midterm, we were given 28 images of ancient Chinese art, of which we had to research and memorize the name (many of which were in Mandarin), location, and date/dynasty. The test then gave us 5 of the images, where we had to identify them and then write a mini essay analyzing each one. Sounds horrible? It was, but the final was even worse. We were given 30 images and had to identify 10 of them on the test with name, artist, and date. We were also given 10 terms that we had to memorize 5-10 specific description phrases for each one otherwise we would lose points. Oh and then we had to write 3 timed essays, some of which had prompts that were barely covered in class. On a positive note, the TAs for this class were very kind and graded the tests nicely. If you do have the misfortune of taking this class, save yourself time and don't bother reading the textbook, you really don't need to. This class was my most time consuming, and I found myself looking at images of ancient Chinese art when I should have been working on chemistry or math. I'm sure this class would be amazing if you're an art history major who is actually passionate, but as a pre-med just looking for GE fulfillment, this class was a major waste of time.

I had both Lee and Faulkenhausen for this course. I'm an art history major so I didn't find the material difficult at all, but I that doesn't mean I found it interesting. Fortunately, the professors were kind and were lenient with the ongoing TA strike so grades weren't issue. However, I had difficulty paying much attention at all during lectures because I just couldn't get into it. The lectures felt sporadic and know one knew what information to focus on. I think Chinese art is so interesting (i'm chinese) but the stories could've been weaved together much better and main ideas more clearly stated to help out students more.
