DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! SAVE YOURSELF!!!!!!
I am not an Art History major, came in knowing nothing about the subject and was expecting to learn something interesting. This class made me want to drop out of school even though I was graduating that quarter.
First, she expects TOO MUCH on students to understand EVERY LITTLE DETAIL. Like if you don't remember abc did xyz in year lmnop, she will comment on your essays with stuff like "this lacks any critical information" or "this is too general, it's missing xyz." Like sorry I didn't have time to memorize everything about rocks and trees (which sums up what this entire class is about). Second, the subject is pretty boring to begin with but her lecture style makes it even worse in the sense that she talks so quietly, her slides are messy, and she drones about the world's boring-est subject.
Third... this is the most important part. She is a VERY STRICT GRADER!!!! Bro was failing half the class and then wondering why we were failing as if she isn't the one giving us all sh*t grades... I went to her office hours once and she ripped me to shreds, talking about how my essay was trash and asked if I had ever taken a writing class before (i major in humanities and i was flabbergasted lol). If you don't do everything exactly like she wants it, she will automatically trash your essay and give you a sh*t grade without any notable feedback. The comments she leaves are too brief and not very helpful when you don't know what/how to improve. I believe she only became lenient with her grading after the midterm when half the class showed up to office hours complaining and crying about why they were failing. She is the kind of professor who thinks they're always right and never wrong, so don't bother trying to dispute your grades because she won't budge on her statements even though you are proving her hypocrisy. (Case point: I went to her OH after seeing a bad grade on my paper and she told me my thesis was too general. I told her I followed her prompt exactly. Her prompt was something along the lines of "Reflect upon abc and how it inspired xyz with 3 key details," so my thesis was literally that and she said you weren't supposed to compare/contrast, you were supposed to just write about xyz. And i was like ok but then why did you tell us to reflect upon abc if you don't want us writing about it??? And then when i mentioned the 3 key details in my thesis, she told me not to write about all of them, but only the last one because she put it last so it's the most important like WHAT??? how does that even make sense, i've NEVER heard of that in my life. it sounded like she kept trying to make up reasons as to why I got the grade I received, even though i was making legimate counterpoints to her weirdly worded prompt.
TLDR; SAVE YOURSELF AND DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! PROF IS A VERY STRICT GRADER
Begging ya'll don't take this class or this professor EVER. This was hell. Like my GPA died to write this review. If you have to take her for a GE, pray you have a nice TA. But I beg DO NOT take her for an upper div, especially if she has not TA.
Her tests aren't hard persay, as long as you write EXACTLY what she wants. She does not give partial credit. She does not give clear instructions for writing assignments but basically fails you if you do not write what she likes. She does not give 100s on any essay. I consider myself to be a good student and had a 3.9 GPA before this class. I study, go to every lecture, went to OH, and have done so for this class, but this has been the worst experience with an Art History class. Like this is humanities. Please save yourself and avoid this professor at all costs in lower or upper division classes. If you actually have to take her the only way you can really survive is to memorize all her PowerPoints for the tests and go to office hours to make her clarify what she wants for each assignment. I also did some begging in her office hours. Literally 2/3 of our class failed the midterm and many of us (including me) has D's in Canvas. Luckily, she curved final grades. She says she doesn't fail anyone, but the stress is not worth it.
