Chinese 50: Very amicable professor with a funny grandpa like personality. His lectures are interesting and entertaining at times. Yeah, the man goes off on a tangent a lot because of all the questions coming from native Chinese students. I really don't understand why they have to ask so many questions when they clearly know the answers to it. Just a waste of time in my opinion.

Anyway, Exams (midterm 40% and final 60%) are all based on lectures and account for 80% of your grade. Don't miss it, or you'll be screwed. Best to buddy up with someone if you plan on being absent. It's a combo of fill in and multiple choice with a 3 page essay at the end. [you'll have to write two 3 page essays for the final]. ALL graded by TA's.

Unlike the past, Section is now required. I really see no point in it, but it'll be 20% of your grade. Seems like the TAs have a lot of influence now.

The one thing I don't like about this class is how it's stretched out to 3 lectures in the morning, each lasting 50 min. I'd rather have a 1.5 hr lecture and come in twice a week as opposed to 3.

Overall, class is pretty straightforward and most do well. Honestly, you'd be a dumb ass to get a B or lower in this class.

Good professor. His tests are really easy and he tells you exactly what's on it before the test. Even though there are essay questions for the exam, he tells you the prompt ahead of time. The readings for discussion were long, but it's more or less related to the same stuff that you learn about in lecture. Take good notes in class and you'll be fine.

Reading through the all the past evaluations, I figured I'd take this class along with 3 science courses cause then it'd be a great GPA booster, along with the fact that it'd be like I was taking 3 classes instead of 4. However, Professor Chou completed changed the class. True there's still no homework and papers to write, but there was no study guide. No study guide for midterms or finals. I got past exams and they were nothing like the midterm. There's essay questions now, and the ta's have their own essay questions requiring knowledge from the readings from discussions. The readings just gave me an extra load on top of ochem, lab, and physics. He's a great professor though, really funny. Gives handouts during classes, so no need to buy any books.

this is definitely the easiest class ive ever taken at ucla. no homework, no paper. all you have to do is just memorize everything from the study guide and you'll be able to finish the midterm and final in less than 30mins. A super easy, pretty interesting, gpa booster class, what are u waiting for, take the class!!!!

Chinese 50 is the easiest class i have ever taken in ucla. This class will not only save your GPA, but also some cash since there is no textbook needed. For spring quater 2007, there was NO homework for the class. But this is not the best part. There was NO paper either! So you don't need to do anything for this class. The only work is probably remembering the notes from lecture. Midterm and Final are straight forward from the notes and only take some people 15 minutes to finish each. Also, discussion for this class is pretty easy. Just show up and do some research. (and the discussion is not really relevant/related to the class or exams). So take Professor Chou's Chinese 50 if you need it for GE or just for fun.

After reading the reviews, I took the course thinking it was gonna be a cake walk. Just memorize his important lecture notes and handouts, do the paper, ace the exams. Check. And wtf -- I got an A-. That had to be a mistake. I only missed one point on the midterm, one point on the paper, and at most a couple points on the final. I took it up with my TA, and it turned out I got a 94.5% overall... yes, an A-! But I talked to Prof. Chou, and since he's such a nice guy, he bumped it to an A. So be forewarned: it's easy stuff, but you gotta get a 95% for an A.

i had him last quarter for chinese 50 and ive been recommending his class ever since. its an easy A, just go to all his lectures, take notes, and memorize everything he gives you. you have to know a lot of lists but he simplifies everything for you so theres not that much to remember. his TAs are ok...i dont know if theyre much help or not. but definitely take his class (and show up to class), its interesting and pretty fun.

Pretty much a very easy class.

Don't need to go to the lectures; discussions basically cover everything you need to know.

I missed 2/3 of the lectures, went to every discussion, and memorized my notes the day before the exams, and i got a secure A.

There's a midterm and a final, and a book review. The book review isn't all that bad, and i absolutely ABHOR writing. The TA's grade them and are generally very easy-going (or at least mine did-Jenny Quan). They make you do a chapter a week so by the time it's due you're pretty much done. I definitely recommend this class w/ Professor Chou for an easy G.E.

By the way, he has a strong accent and you may not know what he says half the time but it's mildly entertaining.
