To further expand my other comments that have already been made about this class is that he's not Professor Kim because he takes his time to get to all the melodic instruments since they will be the ones in the advanced, not us on the floor. It never occured to me until later on, which is kind of a bummer, and he also makes you write a 3 page report on Balian music for some reason. I have absolutely no clue why, but hell, it's not that hard. I think the hardest part of this class is the audition to get in, which knocks out a lot of people who can't follow the leader. That seems to be the trend in Ethno preformance (excluding Li and Kim).
He's a very personable professor, if you ever want to ask him a question, don't be afraid to. He had lunch with me even and we talked and chilled out before class. Tough for most of us because we have to play the full hour and fifty minutes without a break. Says for the final that we'll have a jury on any of the instruments and we have to memorize the song. The major blow of this course is not the professor, but the room itself. The only days it's avaliable are Monday (until night) and Saturday/Sunday. Other than that, you won't be able to pratice a bit for this course.
I think he is a very very cool professor. His class is so much fun because we only have to come to class and practice the music. As long as you try, you'll most likely get very good grade! I definetly going to take the Advance class next quarter (spring 2002)
