This is the perfect G.E. for north campus majors. It is fun and interesting to learn about our physical world. Also, it isn't back-breaking but rather pretty easy. The midterms are practically the homework problems compiled and the final is a bit harder so study more for that. Labs can be fun if you make it fun, but long and tedious if you just do it. Grading is easy. He posts lecture notes on the web so you don't have to go to class, but you might as well to learn the material anyway.

Ian McLean is a good, funny, jolly man. He wants you to learn and is very very nice. His accent is fun, he knows his material, is pretty organized, and most of all likes what he's teaching and that come across. You don't really need to read the book, but use it for reference for the homework questions. This is the perfect G.E., so take it and relax, learn something, and get an A!

He is by far the best professor I've had! He is the sweetest man and has the cutest accent! (I'm not hitting on him, I'm just saying ... he's very cute in the grandfather way.) He made Astronomy very interesting and very EASY. It's already an easy subject but he gave a lot of hints to the homework during lectures. If you didn't understand a homework question and emailed him about it, he would help you with it. I only went to his office hours once (right before finals) but he gave me a lot of sample questions and topics to review. I'm sure that if you went for the midterms, he'd help you out too. But the midterms are pretty easy, study the homework and you'll do fine. The final for this quarter was a little tricky but if you talk to him at office hours, you get some advanced questions. I'd say the hardest part about the class are the labs (which I found to be a waste of 2 hours!) but the TAs are pretty easy going and give you a lot of answers. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Professor Mclean. It IS an easy course but I went to his class EVERY lecture because I felt he had something interesting to say. Ace your homeworks. Get A/B's on your labs. Study your homeworks and Ace the midterms. And then you don't have to worry too much about the final. The curve is pretty generous also. I think 25% and below was the cutting point for a fail. And he had office hours EVERY day unlike other teachers. Anyhow, good luck and I hope you choose Mclean cuz he was a great teacher!

Professor McLean is by far the greates professor I've had so far at UCLA. I had him last quarter for Astro 3 and he explained everything exceptionally well! The subject was so interesting because of HIM and the workload is not bad. The homeworks are pretty easy as well as the mid terms and finaL! I would really recommend him...its a great GE to take!!!

what to say about this guy?? He's great! Ill miss having him as a professor. The subject of astro alone isnt all too interesting to most people; however, mclean really works to make people care about the material. He's extremely personable and you can tell that he really cares that you take away knowledge from the class. If you read and go to lecture, theres almost no excuse for not getting an A. He really emphasizes the more important 'need to know' issues. Im soo glad i took this course. Ill miss having Mclean as a professor.

Prof. McLean is one of the best professors at UCLA. He's understanding and available to his students, as well as being funny and personable. The material was pretty easy except for the end of the course, but when it was a little tougher, he really tried to help his students understand all the concepts. The class itself wasn't all that great, the final was a lot harder than most people expected. You have to study and pay attention, but if you do that, you'll be fine.

Astro 3 with McLean is a great class for North Campus students. He breaks down the material nicely and makes it very digestable for non-science people (such as myself), but doesn't make it too easy. This is one of the best science classes I've taken and I can honestly say that I really learned a lot (always keep reading and attend lectures because it does get more difficult towards the end!). As well as making astronomy very interesting, Dr. McLean is a gentleman--a very nice, smart guy with a neat Scottish accent.

mclean is awesome--although the lectures could be boring, he did his best to make the dullness of astronomy exciting...also, his tests were not that hard, just study the reviews, and go to the final review session! reading the book is a waste of time. if you want to boost your gpa then take this class
