Overall, one of the more interesting econ courses. Some topics are kinda tough but Professor Obara is extremely willing to stay after class to answer questions patiently (given he doesn't have another class right after).
I recommend this class.
He's clear, the slides cover almost everything, and the class is reasonable. He's very nice in office hours. There was barely any math. There were two take-home quizzes on which you could collaborate with two other people, and a midterm, then the final. There's no TA, and there are no review sessions. He gives a practice midterm and final.
I am selling the course materials for ECON145. I have taken a detailed note, and I can guarantee you that the slide itself wouldn't suffice to get an A. FYI, I ended up getting an A.

The material is very interesting but he is not 100% clear with what he is talking about. But definitely interesting class, and you gotta remember the exams are usually harder than expected.
He's fair. I recommend him but only because he is easy. He holds very inconvenient office hours and if you do talk to him he will try his best to kick you out fast. In my opinion this isn't a very useful class but it is kind of interesting. His curve is very generous- like one letter grade up generous. Do not expect review sessions for the midterm or final exam. Be comfortable with writing good proofs and providing counterexamples to false statements.
I think Prof. Obara deserves a slightly higher effectiveness rating, at least for his job with this class. Econ 145 includes proofs, basic probability theory, and lots of integrations (and a bit of differential equations). It is essentially a class that will be a breeze for people who are experienced in certain topics of mathematics, and difficult for others. I think this is fair, since the entire Econ 140's series are pretty math intensive. There were quite a few people who could not understand all of the material, especially near the end with the "auctions" topic. However, I think that's mostly NOT Prof. Obara's fault, but rather because a good portion of the class utterly sucks at math. To be fair, I think classes like math 33B (differential equations) and math 170A or stats 100A (Intro to probability theory) should be listed at least as recommended pre-reqs for this class. Having some familiarity with these topics makes the class go from confusing to an easy A.
Lectures consisted of mostly power point slides, with additional clarifications written on the board. He doesn't always word things the best possible way, but makes up for it by going relatively slowly. He always takes time to answer individual questions (sometimes he wastes too much time doing so).
Grading is 30% hw assignment, 30% midterm, and 40% final. The difficulty of the test material was pretty unpredictable. On the midterm, half of the class scored over 90%, but no one scored above 90% on the final . . . in fact the average was around 50. The questions on both the midterm and the final were similar to practice questions and homework. The average on the final was lower because 1. the second half of the quarter has harder material and 2. it was too damn long. He does give something like 40% of the class A's though, so it's hard to mess up with this class.
it takes some time to warm up to his teaching style...but overall he does a pretty good job presenting the material. His exams and homeworks are certainly fair and doable, and he's definitely more than willing to help his students during office hours.
I took Econ 145 with Obara last quarter and it was the best class ever. His lectures put everything together in a clear understandable and applicable format. The homework was not tediuos but rather fun and engaging. Each time I worked out a problem I had learnt something valueable. The exams were not difficult and I got an A without any difficulty. In truth, the lectures just help you work out the HW and exam questions which you can do with ease with the online notes he provides. An excellent educator. If possible, I would take Obara again in a heartbeat. He's passionate and cares about student learning more than most.
