Take this class! The lectures are really interesting, we had some great guest speakers, and the grading is chill enough that you can really focus on learning. Students have to do short lecture response papers to make sure we're paying attention, but they are pretty straightforward. There is a midterm short-answer test. The class grade relies heavily on a group project, about 50% of the grade I think. It is a long paper and presentation that profiles a local public health issue and proposes a service project to address it. It's kind of unfortunate that we are randomly assigned to groups because there will always be someone who doesn't do their fair share. However, the group project was really valuable because I got to work with peers from different disciplines. The professor is nice and willing to chat about your interests and possible future paths. I just really loved this class and wish I could take it again.
Highly recommend this professor! Extremely accommodating during COVID. He allowed us to pick our topic for the action plan which was exciting.
TAKE THIS CLASS!! Professor was super accommodating during COVID and allowed for a 72-hour grace period to turn in assignments late with NO penalty (and this also applied to the midterm!) I learned so much and the workload was light. Weekly reflections, 1 take-home midterm (we had 1 week to complete it - the average was about 95%), and an 'action plan' project that you work with in a group in your discussion sections. Super great course and he really aims to teach students and allows us to work with the material. Highly recommend!
This class was super manageable and very interesting! I took it for the global health minor, but I think any type of pre-med/health student could benefit from taking this class. Grading scheme is: 40% midterm, 40% team action project, 15% weekly online/not proctored quizzes, 5% discussion section attendance. The midterm was short answer, in person, and closed book/note, but was very fair as long as you studied (the class average was an A). The team action project is where you pick a global health issue and devise an intervention, present a 10-minute presentation in discussion section, and write a paper for it with 3-4 other group members. Reading is mandatory but I don't think it's necessary to do. I didn't do any of it and still did well in the class. Concepts on the midterm are taken directly from lecture and not really the readings in my opinion. Classes are also recorded and posted through bruin cast in a timely manner. Dr. Kalofonos is really nice and clearly passionate about global health, and I enjoyed his lectures. He does move through the slides very quickly, so often watching the lecture recordings was more efficient for my learning because I could pause and rewind if necessary. I think this class is very manageable, interesting, pretty easy, and has a fair workload, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in global health.
One of the most down-to-earth professors I have ever met! You can see the passion and care through his work, and that he genuinely cares for his students. Would take again, unfortunate that he doesn't teach any other classes
I enjoyed this course. Dr. Kalofonos knows a lot about global health and it is was interesting taking this within the context of COVID-19. Assignments are easy, mainly all you need to do is the Team Action Project which is due at the end of the quarter. They were flexible and accommodating with deadlines given the circumstances, which everyone really appreciated. As long as you do your part, you should be fine. Eva is a really awesome TA and is always happy to help you out. Anyone who's interested in global health needs to take this course.
Professor Kalofonos is a really knowledgeable and passionate guy. He was super understanding and accommodating during this whole pandemic fiasco. His lectures were engaging, and he emphasizes application of the topics rather than memorization. The class was broken down into a written midterm test, weekly lecture reflections, section participation, and a final group essay/presentation. The group project was super interesting because you can pick any global health issue you want and create an action plan to address it. If you put in decent effort you will definitely do well in this class. Highly recommend him!
