For an 8 AM class, it wasn't bad at all. This class was super low stress. We met once a week and Dr. Firstenbirg was very engaging and a good speaker, she knew how to keep peoples' attention because the material is quite boring. The exams were tough, you couldn't go back on your answers, but they were held remotely and it was open notes. The workload was easy (just tedious), and if you really tried at the ALM's or Labs they would be really good practice for the exams. Thankfully lectures are recorded though so you can go back and listen as many times as you need. Labs are also not mandatory, they say so explicitly and TAs upload the slides.
The structure of this class is amazing, and Professor Firstenberg has provided amazing resources to help students be successful. Going to lecture isn't necessary as it is recorded, and in my experience it was my Lab TA who made the course easier to understand. The key to this class is engaging in Lab and the ALMs; the questions on the exams are just like the ALMs. Also, the practice exams provided are extremely comprehensive + exams are open note. If you are able to, take 100B with Professor Firstenberg!
This class does have a lot of work but nothing that is not manageable. You have weekly ALMs and weekly labs which can require a lot of busy work but it isn't difficult. Just make sure you do your labs according to the rubric so you do not miss any points. Attendance is not mandatory for lecture but it is for lab. The practice midterm and final are sort of similar to the real thing but they are a great way to show you where you need practice on. As long as you understand those problems and the problems from the ALMs, you will be fine. There is also 9 points of extra credit available which definitely take advantage of!
I’m a psychology major and this class was easy. It definitely wasn’t the easiest and the exams could get tricky at times, but if you invest time into this class and pay very close attention to details in your lab assignments, you’re set. Attending OH and asking questions before exams on the discussion board is really helpful.
god was this class awful. everything is weighted super heavily. exams weighted the most. you do alms every week which are the focus of the exams. that consists of participating in a makeshift study or answering questions. then watching a video explaining it and then writing a review of what you did wrong -- this is for completion credit but genuinely write something not just a sentence.
next is lab, which consists of a proverb that will be used the entire quarter. the lab hw's look easy but if you think you wrote enough you did not. write more detail. learned that the hard way bc it is weighted so heavily. missed one point on a lab and grade dropped 5%. so write, write, write. ask TA to look over it too. some of the labs are for completion, some are graded. lecture was not mandatory but it was boring and honestly was pointless. alms were the bulk of the exams.
ok professor. passionate about her topic just a boring class. would never ever take again.
I would enroll in this class with Fristenberg again if I had to with absolutely no stress. I had been hearing terrible things about 100B up until taking it, but the class was so mellow and manageable. The slides very clearly lay out what you need to know on the midterm/final, and the tests were multiple choice and easy. The class was Bruincasted. The labs built upon the lectures, and perhaps it was just my TA but the labs were graded fairly and we always extremely similar questions in class. The weekly ALM modules felt a little like busy work at times, but were easy points. This was one of my least stressful classes. There was no use of R, unlike 100A (which was sort of a bummer because I was looking forward to a refresher on that), and I do not recall ever doing math. We built upon building an experiment based on the proverb "laughter is the best medicine" throughout the labs up until the final project for the lab. I recommend :)
Hmmmmm... Dr. Firstenberg seems like a great person and is also an engaging lecturer and is very knowledgable about the topic, but unfortunately the material covered in this class was just not my favorite at all. It was pretty boring, but I mean I understand why psychology and a lot of other majors have to take it because it is really important to know about well-conducted experiments. This class, in my opinion, was pretty easy it was just so boring.
OMG also labs are like 2 hours long and are soooo boring. They are not very helpful and are actually optional. I went to them for the first 4 weeks and then I stopped and I don't think it effected my grade or how well I understood the course at all.
If you get a decent TA, this class is a breeze. My TA would mark off points on the assignments seemingly at-will, despite the fact that I would follow the rubric excruciatingly closely. This class was boring but informative; I did extremely well on every assignment that was NOT graded by my TA, and I guarantee you I would have scored higher with a different person grading my assignments.
If you get a dogsh*t TA with a bug up their @$$, you are in for a trip. Otherwise, you will learn a lot even if the material is not the most engaging. Definitely a class that changes the way you think.
This class wasn't that bad. The lectures were long and quite boring. I attended all the lectures but you could honestly just skip the lectures and listen to the recordings and take your own notes. You don't need to attend labs either but I recommend it since what you do in your lab is pretty much the same as what is assigned for homework but you're given a different scenario. If you don't want to attend lab, download the lab slides and the rubric for the homework and make sure you follow the instructions clearly and to the T. There is only one midterm and one final, both the same format (all online, all MCQ). You read scenarios and you answer questions that pertain to it. The week leading up to your test, the professor gives you practice tests (both short and long ones) for you to work on. If you need any practice tests or want to see what my midterm looked like (with questions and answers), you can hit me up and I'll send them to you **********. I didn't use the textbook and opted out of the inclusive access thing. I don't think you need it. A free pdf of the book is available online if you still want it tho. There is also a LOT of extra credit given and I recommend doing them early on so you don't forget about it. Because of the TA strike this quarter, our professor was pretty lenient and gave us all full credit on our last (and MAJOR) lab assignments and that pushed my grade up to an A.
