Islam 110 was a very easy class that I took. The reading was manageable and the tests were very easy. There was a little memorization of particular names and dates but those details were given on a review sheet. Poonawala was a little difficult to understand but he will become more understandable as the quarter goes on. He is extremely intelligent on the topic of Islam and he is always open to any questions.

The readings in this class are not bad, although Poonawala could definitely have found better resources. He might try to present material in an unbiased manner, but he always somehow manages to throw in a completely unnformative but inappropriate and offending comment into his lectures. He is difficult to discuss readings with since he comes from a single viewpoint. Also, I took an incomplete to finish the last paper in his class and he STILL is giving me grief about it. Never another class with him.

Islamic studies 110

Average professor. Very knowledgeable. Has accent. Easy A. Don't have to attend lecture. Book is very interesting. Overall, a great course to take. Islamic Studies 110 is a great GPA booster and with interesting content.

Yeah, so I agree what everyone has said before. He gets up to the front and speaks with an unbreakable accent and stuffs his sentences with "meaning..." and "so to say...". It's extremely difficult to follow along and most people don't. His voice is monotone and he makes jokes that no one finds funny at all. Don't bother buying the $100 course reader unless you know nothing about Islam...but if you've taken Morony before, you'll breeze through this class without ever attending lecture or doing the reading. The discussions are important though and super helpful because they prepare you with what you should study for the midterm and final. Midterm consists of one essay and 5 ID's. Final is of two essays and 7 ID's. Take it if you already know Islam for a super easy A. For those of you that are jumping into this area brand new, run! You won't learn much from him (but might from the discussion).
