After reading all those "great" reviews for this class, I thought its a good choice to take ECE 132B as one of my ECE elective class, but I can't describe how awful this class was. Imagine someone just reads you the powerpoint in slow motion and jumping around talking about unnecessary topics, then having a hw at the end of a week which is totally irrelevant to what it was thought in lectures. Btw there is no drop hw in this class, so if you f*ckup one or miss one, you lose hell lot of points in overall grade. Finally exams are the worst and impossible to pass.
My advise: even though 'telecommunication' sounds interesting, this class is far away from being interesting and useful, so don't waste your time on taking ECE 132B and try whole quarter to pass the class, just take something you truly like or an easy A to boost up your GPA.
No lecture recordings though Fall 2021 is hybrid. However, exams and homework are doable, and TA really helped a lot!
Professor Rubin is a pretty interesting professor to listen to - you also only needed to listen to his lectures and watch discussion videos to do well in the class. He often goes a lot more in depth than he tests or makes you do hw problems on; you just need to understand the concept well and know how to do the homework. There's no late hw policy for this class. Discussion helps a lot with homework questions. I think tests were super reasonable and tested your knowledge of the materials and the concepts well - if you had done the homework and understood the concept, you could do the problems for sure but they weren't just rehashes of plug & chug questions. I took this class by accident when I intended to take 132A instead and had no interest in the class topic before but this class actually really piqued my interest in communication systems and how things like low level communication, packet sending, and wifi protocols work. Class is kind of like story-time in learning all these concepts, and the more complicated math-y stuff doesn't show up until later.
Professor Izhak Rubin's lecture is like a melody. He is really passionate when he lectures. He points out some real world application of the class material. If you really want to learn current application of Data Communication and Networking such as 5G, he is a good to go. All you need is paying attention and taking notes. The TA is a little bit faster since she wants to cover as much material we need to solve the homework problems. Going to discussion is very helpful. The exam is more focused on ARQ throughput , slotted/ unslotted aloha throughput, and queuing systems. If you understand all the above three sections then you would have at least a solid B. However, unlike exams, homeworks are a little bit out off class lectures so expect some difficulty but if you go to office hours that might help. over all, to succeed in this class just pay attention to the lecture. I really enjoyed this class!!!
Rubin may have been a good teacher 10 years ago as all these reviews here like to say, but he clearly doesn't care anymore. His slides (yes, he lectures off slides), are a jumbled mess, and he spends the entirety of class rambling on about the internet (which he did invent i guess), spending 0% of his time at the board.
