I could probably go on forever about how great I think Getty is. Had him for both 127C and my 97, and received A's in both fairly easily. Great and funny lecturer. Lots of relevant personal anecdotes. His lectures are organized, easy to take notes during, and enjoyable. He's tremendously helpful outside of class, and met with me several times about my 97 paper. Really knows his stuff (particularly Stalin), and made me love Russian history even more than I already did, so much so that I was inspired to actually take Russian. Great professor, great man, couldn't praise him more.

Prof. Getty is a truly amazing lecturer. He really brings the events of Russian history to life with his lectures and stories. Even though I'm not a History major, this was one of the few classes I actually wanted to go to. If you're looking for an interesting history class, then Prof. Getty is the way to go. Take him if you're lucky enough to get the chance - you won't regret it!

took prof. getty for 127C. he is a real gem for the history department. his lectures are masterclass. he weaves the lectures seamlessly along with his sense of humour. the class itself consists of a midterm and final. midterm 25% final 75%. the midterm was tricky in itself. all i have to say is to read and make sure you understand the question he is given. I got a B on the midterm. the Final however is a 10 page take home. overall grade i got was an A-.

Overall Mr. J Arch is one of the best professors in the department. He's flexible, understanding, and has a sort of nihilistic twisted sense of humor. He may very well be one of the best lecturers in the school - granted, he's not going to be the guy rousing an audience, but the way he tells stories just hooks you in. He makes history fun, funny, and interesting through his obscure anecdotes. The only criticism I have of J Arch ties in to his sense of humor. Though he does his job and teaches the class, sometimes he seemed like he didn't even care, arbitrarilly cancelling class for no reason, or cutting class early. In some ways this is great - less work the better, right? But I think it reflected in several of our final grades when we didn't quite get what we wanted, mainly because we didn't have the opportunity to clarify and talk to him in class. But besides his laissez faire approach to holding the class (he's so laid back he doesn't care to be in class too long) he's an incredible resource, mind, and orator.
