By far the best class I've taken as a sociology major at UCLA! Professor Foster is one of the best professors I've ever encountered! He's so passionate and accommodating, he handled every obstacle that came our way this quarter so well it was unreal. He truly cares for the wellbeing of his students :')
For the course work, the material is very interesting and manageable. Practicing the concepts on the homework and reviewing the notes + textbook will really help make everything click. Foster does a great job on making the course fun so you definitely won't regret taking this course!!!
WOW! THIS PROFESSOR IS A SHINING STAR!! 10/10 WOULD TAKE AGAIN. He really cares about his students. During this whole quarter he was the only professor I had who actually cared about his students well being. If you don't take him, I don't know what you are doing.
The best professor I've had so far during my time at UCLA. His lectures are engaging and his homework truly prepares you for the exams. He GENUINELY cares about his students and does not hesitate to make accommodations. 10/10 would take again!!!
HE IS AMAZING! Professor Foster truly cares about his students. I loved ALL of his lectures. Yes, it is not easy, but it is the most useful info. I wish I could take all of his classes. He is very funny and uses pop-culture to relate the material. If you want an easy A, this is not it, but if you try, you can totally get an A and have a great time!
Great class and great teacher! Selling the textbook for this class. Text me if you're interested 818-823-3357
Professor Foster is legitimately one of the best teachers I have ever had at UCLA, and I'm a senior. While the course gets more challenging towards the end of the quarter and the homeworks require ample time to complete, the class is interesting and the professor is funny and dorky and amazing. He is very clear and if you need help with anything, his office hours are SUPER helpful, as can be the TA's. He adjusted office hours to be like 3 times a week so that students with conflicts could go... so sweet of him. I have yet to meet a teacher with as much concern and appreciation for his students as Jacob Foster. Also, he uses memes in his slides. It's adorable and keeps lecture interesting. Try sitting in the front (I didn't and sometimes got distracted and missed big concepts). Be sure to do work with a study group (he allows you to work with 4 other people on homeworks!) OVER ALL, love this class. If you're a soc major and need it to graduate, take it with him :)
So let's start off by stating that I am NOT into math, so I definitely do not enjoy it (let alone any course in the subject).
So for me a lot of the material covered, I couldn't understand in lecture but with enough practice and hardwork, earned an A in the course.
If you're like me, then you'll really need to apply yourself in order to understand the material (that's what it's there for).
I recommend working in groups as previously mentioned. The course consists of:
4 different homeworks:45% of your grade.
Discussion: 10%
A midterm: 15%
and a final: 30%
The tests are fair, be sure to STUDY OFF OF THE HOMEWORK, and definitely buy the book. I can't stress this enough. Be prepared to put time aside to really be thorough on the homework, as the TA's are pretty picky.
What's great about this course is that if you slack off, your grade will show it but then again if you're no math whiz, but you study HARD, you can still earn an A.
Good luck!!

Professor Foster is a great professor. He's caring, very thorough and clear when it comes to lectures. There are about 4 homework sets that he gives and collects, so BEWARE they will take time and effort so be sure to not procrastinate. His midterm was fair, and the final was too. He lets you know everything that will be on the exams beforehand, as well as gives you a study guide. Go to office hours as he is super helpful! Take this class seriously, and try not to fall behind! The homework problems are something you should study thoroughly as it will be similar to the exams! He's the only professor that I recommend to anyone, so be sure to take him! Take good notes, study, and you will get an A or A- :)
GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Professor Foster's office hours are extremely helpful for the homework assignments. Start the homework assignments early because they are very time-consuming and very important. He recommends doing the homework in groups of no more than 5 people. I would recommend trying to do as many of the homework questions by yourself as it will help you understand the material better and then compare your answers with other people. RECORD THE LECTURES. Some of the tricky questions he asks in the homework assignments are based on things that he says in lecture.
Professor Foster is an amazing lecturer. I learned a lot! I think if you read the textbook and keep along during lectures you'll be just fine.
P.s. there is minimal math involved in the course.
