This was my first quarter at UCLA as a transfer student and Professor Krems was the most helpful and amazing teacher I have probably ever had. She is so much fun and makes the material all very interesting and understandable. I never wanted to miss her lectures even though they are BruinCasted and the one time I had to because I had previous plans I was actually bummed. She is also very response when you email her and I highly encourage everyone to go to her office hours when they can just to chat with her because you will always learn a lot. Grading is based on 3 exams and then participation in discussions. The exams on online, open-note and open book, and are more applied problems instead of definition but they are very understandable and never stressed me out. Participation in discussion is based on the TA but if you just show up you are probably going to be fine. I highly recommend taking this class if you can and I hope she teaches more courses in the future because she is a great teacher who really cares about her students. I attended her last office hour and she claimed that none of us would remember her later on and I know that is FARRRRR from the truth, I am definitely going to remember Professor Krems and what I learned form her class for the rest of my life.

easiest psych class i've ever taken at ucla! everything on the exams is either from lecture or from the textbook (primarily main ideas, so not tumultuous to read and take notes on) which made getting an A so easy - didn't even need to do any of the (multiple!!!) extra credit opportunities presented. highly highly highly recommend!

I would highly recommend this class to any psychology major. Professor Krems is an amazing lecturer and actually cares about you learning the information. Exams are online and not cumulative, and you are allowed to do them from anywhere you'd like. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit, which is extremely helpful for bumping up your grade. Discussions are interesting, but I found that they just expanded on the information from the lecture. Overall, the class is relatively easy and the content is interesting. Take it!!

Dr. Krems is a fantastic teacher. Her lectures are very engaging and I never get bored in her class. The class is mostly graded on the three tests based on the textbook and her lecture slides. Highly recommend her class I feel like I have learned a lot on the topic without being overly stressed out by busy work.

Professor Krems was a very engaging, fun lecturer. I enjoyed how she prioritized presenting about new research in lecture. However I think there was too much of a focus on evolutionary psychology and the evolutionary lens, which meant that we did not spend as much time as I would've hoped learning about actual social psychology. It seemed as if we learned mostly evolutionary biology in lecture and then read about social psychology in the textbook. I did not especially enjoy reading the textbook, it felt like it used high-school directed languages (at one point, saying something to the effect of "when you think of others in your high school class") and this did not necessarily feel appropriate for a college level course. Assigned texboook readings were also very long and written in a longwinded way---giving examples/stories to illustrate topics, which I can see the aim of making these abstract topics more concrete, however, I found this boring, unnecessary (you can make these topics concrete just by thinking about them, you don't need a story about them), and overly time consuming.
An even bigger problem with this course was the massive emphasis and time use put into recapping basic evolutionary biology and research methods which also decreased the amount of time we were able to spend learning on social psychology. While I'm sure a review of these GE/intro courses was helpful for some, it did not feel like a good use of time personally.
Exams also also online and unproctored, an interesting choice and something I assume most students use ChatGPT for.

I recommend this class for all psych majors to fulfill their upper div requirement. You will definitely need the textbook for the exams (you will miss out on easy exam points) and there are opportunities for extra credit. Although lectures are audio recorded, I think that you should try to attend lecture as much as possible because she makes them very engaging and it helped me remember concepts she covered. Overall, the course was very easy to manage and doesn't require too much of your time.

Professor Krems was the most engaging lecturer I have ever had. Every class was exciting and hilarious. The exams were also open-note and very easy. You definitely need the textbook and pay attention in discussion but I loved this class and hope to take more with Dr. Krems.

The professor is extremely engaging and makes the class interesting. The exams however are like 50% from the readings which are super dense and a good chunk of it is not covered in lectures. Everyone gets a different exam which sometimes can suck bc there are some questions she will give everyone a point for if she determined it was too hard so if you got those you got a free point and if you didn't, you didn't get the point.

Lectures are recorded (only audio), which was super beneficial to look back on before exams. The entire class is mostly based on exam grades (other than a couple small assignments + extra credit) but they are open book! The class content was also very interesting.

Very engaging and funny professor, the only issues I had were the confusing slides and towards the end of the class the subjects we went over were a bit dry. You will need the textbook for the exams but skimming through it will be enough. This class is heavily weighted on exams.
