Quarter: Spring 2019
Grade: N/A
June 5, 2019

Very good professor with an amazing course. It has backwards teaching (learning at home through a FREE website (bless up) called Canvas, which is similar to LaunchPad for you fellow scientists), and then we reinforce the learning in lecture. Personally, I enjoy this method more because it means I get to skip lectures, which is amazing of course. No sections/lectures are mandatory except the discussion sections every TWO weeks to take the 5 quizzes throughout the quarter. The material is very easy to understand if you just do the Canvas homework. We learn some R language coding, but it's very friendly and he lets us even have a cheatsheet with all of the R syntax and functions, but we don't really need it for quizzes. I would definitely take his classes again.

Also, I can't stop thinking about how much he sounds like one of the few voice actors in Skyrim lol (the voice actor for Belethor, specifically)

Quarter: Fall 2018

I loved how Stigler was very concerned with making sure the students understand the topic conceptually. He gives a bunch of extra credit, especially for the final. He rounds minuses up to the full letter grade (so A- would be an A). My main criticism for this class was that I absolutely hated the backwards classroom teaching style (we learn on the free online textbook and reviewed in class). It made me feel extremely disconnected from the classroom, as the lectures weren't anything important or needed. Went to class max of 8 times all quarter, and didn't take stats class before

He gave us free notebooks to take our notes in, and we could use them on quizzes and exams. He made his own online interactive textbook that he tested on us, and it was also used to complete our homework assignments. He gave us all the tools we needed, and I can't think of a nicer, better professor than him. Definitely recommend.

They revamped 100A to be more conceptual. The coding component of the class is beginner-friendly. The way you're tested on it in class is that the question will usually show a data table and you'll be asked how to graph or analyze it. The choices will be lines of code. You're given a class journal where you're expected to write your notes in. It's allowed to be used during the bi-weekly quizzes and even the final! All the TA's were friendly and helpful. Stigler is also friendly and he displays the enthusiasm to help struggling students. Looking at past exams of 100A, the new 100A is definitely a lot easier. If you forgot some concepts in Stats 10 that's fine because you'll learn it again here.

I absolutely loved this class and am so glad I was able to take it with Stigler. I learned so much and I love the way the class is taught through the textbook he created. The materials are all free which is a huge plus when traditionally textbooks can be so expensive. You are also given a free notebook to use to take notes which you get to use on all of the quizzes and exams, which I found endlessly helpful. This emphasizes Professor Stigler's wish for students to understand concepts instead of just memorizing them - you can write down definitions all you want and they will be useful, but you need to understand the concepts more than simple equations and rule memorization. I have taken multiple statistics classes before this one (Stats 10 and AP Stats) and while I found them useful because most of the concepts were familiar, you definitely don't need to have taken either because the concepts are presented in quite a different way and your previous learning can even become a bit of a hindrance (not too much, but it can be frustrating because Stigler is up in the conceptual land while a lot of statistics courses are down in the calculating/simplistic land).

There are 5 quizzes in the class, given every other week in section. They are all online and the lowest one is dropped. There is only one exam, also given online, and that is the final. When figuring your final grade, they will either weight the quizzes equally with the final or weigh the final more to ensure you get the highest grade. Professor Stigler says that this is because some people can learn better along the way, while some don't understand it until the very end, meaning all types of learners can do well and not one is punished over the other.

Participation is mandatory through PollEverywhere in class, so do show up! Homework is done through the online textbook and done by completion. If you do the homework fully, it will normally take 6-8 hours so do plan ahead.

I also would recommend utilizing the study halls held by the TAs each week - they are insanely helpful. Even if you think you understand the concepts - go! You can check your understanding, help teach other students, or just work on this week's chapter. I would recommend going to at least one study hall per week - they were offered every day in the quarter I took this class!

Stigler really cares for student learning and tries to engage his class which I really appreciated. He's huge in the field of psychology, which is why I appreciated how down to earth and invested he was, despite being so heavily immersed in academia as well. Great professor and would definitely recommend taking him over the other 100A professors.

If you'd taken stats 10 before this class, this class will be a breeze. That being said, tests can be hard if you do not pay attention in class. All concepts on the tests are gone over in lectures and you should attend his OH or Stacy's discussion if you're confused. Tests are purely conceptual so no calculation is required. Homework is online and 100% doable. No textbook required so more $$ saved. I highly recommend Stigler for psych 100A; he is kind and cares a lot about his students. One thing though, is I am not a big fan of his lecture slides because personally they are not useful for studying (again, pay attention in class and attend lectures). His lectures are recorded though but you don't want to wait until the day before the exam to watch them. Oh! And he allows one cheat sheet during midterms/final! :D

Unrelated:
During the final, a girl came late and he comforted her and told her she can still take the final. I just thought it was such a sweet and beautiful moment when a professor understands his students. Although I wish I had gotten an A+ in his class, I'm pretty satisfied with an A.

Take PSYCH 100A with Stigler. As a first-year, I've heard that this class, along with 100B, was one of the weeder classes for Psychology department majors, so I was pretty scared. I came in with no statistics background and he was able to teach the subject well enough for me to do well on his tests and the class as a whole. The class is longer than most classes, timing at an hour and fifteen minutes, but Stigler makes class quite entertaining and throws a few jokes in. It's obvious he is passionate about the subject. He is extremely generous in his grading; even though his class is graded on a straight-scale, he does not give out any minuses. He had an opportunity for 1% extra credit on our final grade if 90% of the class did course evaluations (which sadly, was not fulfilled) and had 5 extra credit questions on our final. He is also very caring and approachable in his office hours and is willing to help any student. That being said, if you don't understand something, go to his office hours; they are life-saving. His class is purely conceptual, you will do absolutely no calculations on any exams and will not even need a calculator for this class. All resources and materials needed in his class are FREE, including the textbook! Exams are done online through Qualtrics and you are allowed one 8.5"x11" sized "cheat sheet" per exam in which you can use both sides and can be typed. Homework was done through the online textbook and was due weekly. Participation does matter in this class, but you are able to miss two lectures and still get full credit. He also records all of his lectures and uploads them onto YouTube. In the end, this was one of the few classes I actually looked forward to attending; that says a lot about Stigler.

Stigler's class was very doable. I hardly studied for this class, and did all the homework (which is required). Be sure to write down important concepts that he explains during lecture. I basically did that and wrote some stuff down on my review sheet, and got an A. His exams are now done online during lecture. Also, he does NOT down curve. I highly recommend taking this class with Stigler.
