Your mileage will definitely vary for this class, depending on your how good your TA is at teaching and how they grade. My TA Esther was amazing. You could pretty much skip the main lectures because her explanations about concepts that taught in lecture were so good, and she was super effective at prepping the class for the papers by going over the prompts and possible ways you could respond to them. Unfortunately, the TA strike meant the end of discussions, but the professor was really accommodating and pretty much gave everyone As for the rest of the quarter. Expect the grade distribution for this quarter to be pretty skewed.
Unless you have a really good TA, I think this would be a pretty hard class. However, I found the concepts that were covered super interesting (especially Kant), and I would take another course like this one again.
Dewitt relishes in making her course harder than they need to be. I am a fourth year philosophy major and have never experienced someone as obnoxious in their delight of making their students struggle.
She had issues in her personal life, which I was completely sympathetic of. However, it resulted in a horribly unorganized quarter. Although we were expected to be understanding of her circumstances she was in no way considerate of student time or lives. She made up deadlines and was unwavering in her idiotic scheduling of things. You would think that since she was effectively screwing us with posting lectures late, or not at all at time, that she would reflect that with flexibilities with deadlines but instead we had to assume the consequences of her failures. This class should not have been difficult but she lost control very early on and made it exponentially worse.
In addition, she within her lectures I often found myself cringing at her lack of compassion or awareness on many social issues. I am not sensitive or overly politically correct but she was on the verge of spewing overtly racist nonsense daily.
Overall would say to just avoid her if possible, not a caring teacher nor an efficient lecturer.
I LOVED Professor DeWitt. She is such an interesting person and gives engaging lectures, and is extremely fun to talk to during office hours. I took this class remotely, and while I think this class would be 1000x better taken in person, she did the best she could given the circumstances. My main grievances with the class was that she went over the allotted lecture time almost every class period, but she recorded all the lectures and kept them up for the whole quarter so its not as though I was time constrained by her taking them down a week later. The second half of the class is super interesting, talking about abortion and the death penalty and gun control, and you get to choose what you write about for the final paper. Her midterm and final were slightly challenging, but only if you didn't watch and write notes for her lectures. I made sure I took meticulous notes for each lecture since the exams were open note and I was a fine. Definitely would recommend this class!
Prof Dewitt just reads off of "screenshares" during lecture, which are just long documents that lay out information you need to know. Attending lecture isn't necessary as long as you go over the screenshares. You'll have to write a few papers during this class but they're pretty short and not bad as long as you do the readings. TAs are not super hard graders and leave loads of constructive criticism so if you do bad on the first paper you can improve. They also offer automatic 2-day extensions upon request. Definitely attend discussion as most learning will occur then. Dewitt is nice, but boring in lecture because she just reads off the page. She sent a class-wide email at the end of the quarter saying she would not be changing/rounding anyone's grade though. Overall I'm glad I took this class as it fulfilled a GE req and it wasn't very difficult. My TA was awesome so I looked forward to discussion every week (shoutout Josh).
Professor DeWitt is a sweet and helpful professor! There is no attendance requirement and when I took the class online, the lectures were all pre-recorded. Her lectures can be dry (if it was in-person, I can see how some people would fall asleep), but she is genuinely passionate about her subject. It consisted mainly of her talking over screen-recordings of her notes. There are no PPT slides you can annotate, and her notes were not posted to encourage students to watch the lectures.
Also most of her lectures went over the allotted time, which she made up for by cancelling some lectures at the end of the quarter.
She's very friendly and approachable during office hours so don't be afraid to go in even if you're the only student there! Her midterm and final were both very reasonable as long as you watched the lectures and took notes. The midterm consisted of two essay questions, and the final consisted of around 50 MCQs. There was also a 3-4 paper written with a moral perspective on the issue of our choice. She also provided an extra credit opportunity in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and BLM movement, which was very understanding of her.
The first half of the quarter focused mainly on Kant and Bentham's moral theories, and the second half was moral applications to issues (like abortion, death penalty, etc). It's often easy to pinpoint where she stands on certain issues but she emphasizes that each student should learn to form their own educated opinion on the subject.
There are many long readings but I honestly didn't read all of them, just the ones relevant to my paper (and I also read parts of Bentham and Kant). Don't feel pressured to read through all of them because she goes over the important parts of the text during lecture.
It's a good idea to find a study buddy to split readings with if you're planning on writing the paper on the same subject.
Last note: She takes plagiarism seriously, and the paper isn't even that much writing, so try not to be tempted to take content directly from online resources without citing it. The professor emphasizes that she wants us to take content only from the lecture notes and the assigned text, because often the Internet is "wrong" in their interpretations of certain topics.
Professor Dewitt is not the most engaging professor and the lectures are super boring. There is no attendance req for this class, two papers each worth %40 and %10 of your grade is 5 reflection papers. The class heavily depends on how the TA grades the papers since the professor doesn't even bother discussing paper grades with you. The TA (Ayana) was one of toughest graders ever and her way of grading is due to most students not showing up to her sections (the sections are optional). I do not recommend taking this class at all if you want to keep a good GPA!!!
If you are interested in pure math/theoretical physics any philosophy class will be a great choice. Philosophy is much easier than other arts and humanities stuff where reason and logic are totally screwed up.
As a math major for me personally this class is great and provided me with sights into a closely related field of study to math. I decide to take more philosophy classes from here.
For Dr. DeWitt, she is definitely a field expert. Her STEM background is noticeable as she got her bio bachelor from UChicago. If you are a STEM major but have to take an arts&humanities GE, DON'T MESS HER.
Going to lecture is very important. I enjoyed Professor DeWitt's lectures as she often engages with the students and tells stories during lecture (which are sometimes funny). I have no background in philosophy, but Professor DeWitt did a great job of explaining the topics during lecture. The class is only graded on 2 papers (which are a little tough but going the TA is very helpful) and an relatively easy final. Overall, I would take this class again with Professor DeWitt.
DISCLAIMER:I took this class remotely in Spring 2020.
For this class, we had a midterm which was 2 essays in 24 hours, a final paper due Week 10, and a final exam that was multiple choice. The workload was not heavy at all but there was readings that I never really did. Her lectures were recorded and posted asynchronously so we were able to watch them whenever we wanted to. What bothered me about her lecture style is that she did not use slides. Instead, she would screen-share her notes on a word doc and would read off of them pretty fast. This made it difficult to pay attention because I found myself racing to copy her super long notes instead of listening to what she was actually saying. Her lectures were also usually over an hour which made is very tiring to copy her notes three times a week. The first half of this class was very boring but the second half was super interesting since we learned about abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, and gun control. I think I would have enjoyed this class more if her lecture style was more accommodating (for example, if she provided us with slides that we could annotate) so that I can actually pay better attention. The professor was really nice though and I do not blame her considering that we are all new to remote learning. Overall, this is a pretty easy class just keep up with the lectures so that you do not have to take notes for hours the week before the exams.
Professor Dewitt knows her stuff. She just gets really distracted a lot, making us all behind on schedule. She lectures by screen sharing her notes on word, which isn't so bad. She lets you use her notes and your own notes for her examlets (basically just quizzes for each philosopher we get through Aristotle, Kant, and Mill).
I personally got bored with this class. She tends to talk A LOT making you get really bored from lectures. I gave up in the end and didn't decide to put much effort into each of my papers. Her examlets were pretty hard because she requires you to understand the theories. Most of the questions are found in her notes, but there are a few that require hard thinking.
She is pretty disorganized and it felt like we kept having to cram time because we were always behind, but we did still get through everything in the end.
Would I recommend others to take this GE? Maybe if you really really enjoy Philosophy. If you don't, don't take it. I liked it at first but now I don't.
