McBride is a solid professor. The films we watched were mostly very heavy and difficult to get through, and mostly not that interesting. The papers aren't too hard to write but do take some effort, though I would not do the readings until you start writing the paper (they're just not worth it for a class like this). Definitely pay close attention to the thematic lectures, as they're easy points for the quizzes. Overall a fine class that I would take if you need some credits.
I really like this professor, so I decided to take this course. It’s super interesting; however, the movies were a bit boring at times, and watching them at 9 AM for three hours was tough. Since none of the films are in English, you have to pay close attention to read the subtitles.
The class included three quizzes based on thematic lectures and three essays, including the final. I felt the grading was on the stricter side, but the professor is one of the best teachers here.
This class was different to other history classes I have taken, which I liked. Obviously, the foundation of the class is watching films from this era, and I think the professor picked a really nice variety of films. I liked some better than others but none were awful. Definitely take notes on the films and on the film elements that McBride discusses at the beginning of the class. The class meets once a week which I found very manageable. Overall would suggest that anyone interested in the subject material take this class because it is a less convential way of learning about history.
