Dr. Wong was seriously the most helpful out of all the professors that were teaching Psych 116 (Wong >> Ringach > Grisham >> Blair). He didn't have his own "module," but he was at every lab discussion, lecture, and office hours answering student questions (including the CCLE forum). He was never vague about answering my questions, and while other professors/TA's were somewhat withdrawn in helping students, Dr. Wong really does want to help the students who ask for it.
The actual course had 3-4% of extra credit opportunities. There were three modules all weighted equally and independently. All lab assignments were due at the end of the module for the most part. This class was kinda useless, not going to lie, and it was a lot of busy work! I did not like that the professors were not very organized with rubrics/grading as well. This was probably my least favorite psych course, but Dr. Wong is a great professor.
Taking this class my first quarter freshman year was one of my dumbest mistakes, especially for the fact that I'm not even a stem major! Thought the focus would be psych heavy, but DO NOT forget its called psychoBIO because I sure did. Lectures were really interesting, but really focus on taking good detailed notes. Midterm and final were some of my hardest ever at UCLA, extremely Bio focused so lots of details, images and definitions that had to be memorized (my study guide was like 40 pages). If you're a Comm major just don't be as dumb as me....literally why take this when there are so many easier options. Content was really interesting, but the amount of studying I did is gross. If you enjoy science you'll probably be fine but hey I warned you.
Overall, I really didn't enjoy this class and I wouldn't recommend it as a GE course. However, I took a class where the lectures were split between Dr. Wong and Professor Krasne. Dr. Wong's lecturers were far better than Krasne's, and I understood Wong's content so much more. It was Krasne's half of the class that I really didn't understand and struggled with on the midterm and final. If you pay attention to Dr. Wong's slides, you can easily understand much of the content. He is kind and very helpful, and I felt very comfortable asking him questions. I felt bad because I think he wanted to engage with the class but nobody had their cameras on, but that is the nature of online school.
Dr. Wong is extremely helpful in this class! I took him for 119Y the previous quarter and for 116A this quarter and had no trouble both understanding the class content. Even though the 3 hour labs can sometimes drag, as long as you complete the assignment done you can leave early. Be sure to listen to his lectures as he outlines important content you will eventually need for your 3 write-ups in this class. Grading is done by the TA, and is fair if you have paid attention in both lecture and labs, and you're allowed to work with people in your lab group to help each other answer questions (of course, no plagiarism though). Overall, take this class with Prof. Wong if you can for a smooth quarter and interesting experiments that were well-adjusted for online classes!
Dr. Wong has been one of the most helpful professors I have ever had here at UCLA. He hosted numerous office hours before assignments were due and was present at every lab meeting for questions. The only thing that would cause someone to have difficulties with this class would be their own procrastination on the assignments, because we were given very generous deadlines for when the labs were due. Overall, great guy who gives very clear answers to your questions regarding the material and is very approachable.
The man, the myth, the legend, Dr. Jared Wong. He is one of the best lecturer/professor I've had in my entire UCLA career, as he is always super welcoming and caring about his student learning. Regarding the class, the class does focus a lot on biology and the evolution of psychosexual behaviors but it was definitely super interesting to learn about your own identity. This class was definitely not the easiest course I've taken, but the workload is relatively light. During the summer, the grade distribution was broken down into 37% midterm, 37% final, 16% study questions, and 10% attendance (only during summer since it was 23 students total). The first half of the course is relatively super fair and pretty straightforward, but the 2nd half of the course was a KILLER. I underestimated it so much, as the final exam hit me like a truck, but nonetheless, it was super doable. His exams are super fair because he tests straightforward from lecture and slides, but about 50% of the questions on the test are relatively tricky so make sure you write down everything he says in lecture to clarify stuff. Other than that, just put in the work and try to love what you learn in this course, and you will do great. Good luck.
Let me be clear, this class is tough. You need to know the material inside out and study with other people to do well. The content is interesting and engaging, so it feels like it would be an easy class but the tests are often tricky. There are 3 tests, 30 questions each, that are 80% of your grade, and 10 quizzes, that are 20% of your grade. The quizzes are hugely helpful bc they are due the week after the content is learned, and you get full credit if you get 5/10. The lowest grade is dropped as well. The tests are tough, if you miss a few questions, you're in the B range. There is EC as well, 2% on top. That said, Dr. Wong is AMAZING! So knowledgeable about many topics, and I believe he designed the course himself so this is something he is passionate about.
Professor was goated! Open note exams. Best thing I would suggest is to write down literally everything he says on top of the content loaded in the slides. Course Breakdown: 3 exams, each 25%, 15% for attendance (clicker) and 10% for study sets. The study sets were questions similar to the exams and gave some insight as to how the exams were set. They were 30 questions, 50 minutes based on about 6 lectures. It lowkey was a bit of a time crunch but if you took good notes and listened to lectures you will be okay. Professor Wong is the best! (and lowkey fine)
If you ever get the chance to take this class with Dr. Wong, please do!! This class was so interesting and eye-opening and the way he structured the class made it easy to focus on learning the concepts instead of memorization. I took it when it was online so all tests (2 midterms and a final, all non-cumulative) were done on CCLE. We were also required to answer study questions on CCLE that were like practice quiz problems (you got full credit if you got an 80% or better) and we were able to attempt the quiz as many times as we wanted as long as it was before the due date. All tests were multiple-choice and were very fair and representative of the content he taught. Overall, I would highly recommend this class!
I loved this class! The most difficult module was with Dr. Wong; we were tested on parts of the brain and given a lab practical to test our knowledge of associated systems, functions, etc. I studied a lot for this module and made Anki cards, created a Goodnotes notebook with all the notes from class + extremely detailed pictures/labels from the past year's lab practical + study guides that my friends and I created. Since I put in so much work into the Anki deck and notes, I was able to score a high grade on the exam and ended with an A in the class. I'm selling this bundle for $20.
