FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Psych 15 is advertised as a GE course tailored for non-majors, however, the abrasive teaching style and pressure to memorize every single word on the lecture slides proves more intensive and similar to a course for Pyschobio majors. The lecture is often DRY and appears HASTILY prepared. Considering the lecture slides contain DENSE material that comes from the textbook's company (and not created by the professor), there is a dissonance between lecture slides and exams.
I welcome challenging courses, but Psych 15 is unreasonably difficult that it provokes students to lose interest in the subject of Psychobiology altogether. Moreover, the grade distribution includes a majority of high-stakes assignments:
-42.5% midterm
-42.5% final
-15% homework
(You literally have to memorize all the slides.)
With nearly half of the 279 students enrolled scoring a C or lower on the midterm, this damages any chances of earning a passing grade without a curve (that isn't necessarily guaranteed). Furthermore, the unreasonable difficulty of this GE course is detrimental to non-major students pursuing certain graduate programs, such as law, medicine, etc. that heavily weigh university GPA. Ultimately, this course and the professor are not doing the students or university any favor. Psych 15 and Professor Wong do not show any interest in furthering students' academic careers.
Do yourself a favor and do NOT take this class with Wong.
If you listen to the lectures and take notes on the slides it's very easy to do well in this class.
Earlier reviews mention clickers but this professor did not require clickers for my lecture. He used in class extra credit as a way to keep students honest about attending lectures. He was responsive to questions and an engaging lecturer. Material is also super interesting and he tries to make it relevant. Would definitely recommend.
I took Wong for Psych 10 my freshman year and again as a senior for 188B. He gives somewhat challenging exams, given that they're only 30 questions, so you can't miss more than 2 without dropping a letter grade. However, he's quite literally the reason I ended up doing Psych/Cog Sci. He's so engaging, and it's really important to learn about these topics (LGBT+ communities in healthcare, sexual orientation, sex hormones, gender, and sex) if you're pre-med or in general to understand others better. He does talk fast, but if you raise your hand and ask him to slow down or explain something, he will. He's very approachable!
This class was a lot of information and memorizing. Wong himself is a good lecturer and talks really fast, so you have to be engaged during lecture to keep up. He is a young asian man that is pretty funny though (one time he ran out of class really suddenly, and when he came back he explained that he just had to pee really badly lololol). The exams were difficult and you have to memorize a lot of the material in detail.
Honestly it’s not a hard class at all if you listen to his lectures and memorize his PowerPoint slides. If you do that you can easily get an A. I didn’t because for the first half of the course I was completely spaced out and barely studied so I totally effed up on the midterm, but the second half of the class I listened and memorized his slides and got an A on the final. As long as you can memorize a lot, you’re fine.
IF YOU LIKE ENDLESS STRESS, THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU :)
Please do NOT take this class if you're not a science/south campus major. I'm a political science major and I thought this would be a relatively easy science GE but I was wrong. This class is pretty hard and the professor is really funny but really doesn't help with the material. The tests are extremely hard and he only gives 2 percentage points as extra credit. This class is designed for non-majors but the material taught in class definitely requires prior knowledge about neuroscience and biology. The material is also super dense.
I think most people in my class found the midterm pretty hard because the average was 66%. Overall I think this class is unnecessarily hard especially since it's only a GE!!
I think the professor is cool but the material is pretty difficult. I would definitely not recommend this class to anyone, especially north campus majors.
The professor is knowledgeable and a pretty good lecturer. If you enjoy learning about psychobio, you should find the lectures pretty interesting. There is essentially no work except some online quizzes/worksheets which take <10 minutes and are essentially graded for completion . There are two tests, which are 85% of your grade in total. The test content is 100% from the lectures and the lecture slides. While going to lecture isn't mandatory, there are questions on the tests that you won't be able to answer if you don't go to lecture (i.e. what is the condition from the video shown in class?). The tests itself are medium difficulty, but are easy A's if you devote ~10 hours before each test to memorize the slides. There is also in-class extra credit for 2% which he gives out a couple lectures before the midterm and final. If you want an easy A to fulfill your GE, there are probably better classes for that, but if you are interested in psychobio this class is fine.
If you are interested in neuroscience and how the brain works, this class is really interesting. Wong is a great professor who is always enthusiastic and as engaging as possible. I would definitely recommend this class, especially if you took AP Psych in high school. The only thing I would say is this class is definitely less psychology, and more biology and neuroscience so be aware of that going into it. There is basically no work besides a weekly online quiz that you can retake I think like 3 times to get a good score. For the midterm and final, just dedicate a few days to really memorizing the slides and material, and you should be able to easily get an A. As a north campus major, I really enjoyed this class and studying the material.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY NORTH CAMPUS GE! The class is about how our brain works, not about psychology:? Prof Wong is extremely boring and basically just repeats what his slides say without any proper explanation. He talks very fast, therefore it is very difficult to understand what he is saying. Although he gives a few random extra credit points depending if you showed up to class or not, the tests are hard due to the fact that he tests you on the most random details. Would not recommend this class to anyone!!
Overall, Wong is a great professor. He explains materials very clearly, and offers extra credit. However, he speaks too fast for most of the time, which sometimes make me confused about what he’s talking about. The workload is not heavy: there is only a set of study questions per week. Midterm and Final are ok if you memorize his slides and do not make simple mistakes. Recommend this class for a GE!
