Thoughts on the professor and class:
Professor De León is super passionate about his line of work and you can tell he cares deeply about the issue of migration. He is the director of the anthropology department so he has access to resources and connections. This class is super easy but also engaging. The professor has written books on this topic, some of which you will read, and it really touches on issues of human migration, displacement, border issues, as well as how anthropologic evidence comes to be. Definitely take this class if you're looking for something low stakes and for a good grade. With that said, this was my first time taking an anthro class since I have a STEM major. I was not used to the structure because it's so structureless so it definitely was a change for me. There isn't a clear schedule we followed in terms of lectures; it was more so what the professor wanted to talk about but still relevant to what the class was about. He is very funny and he we often spent class time also talking about things occurring right now (like the election) instead of focusing solely on the past which I appreciated.
Grading:
In terms of the grading, we had 2 weekly reflection we had to complete based on the readings. It was just what you thought and how you felt reading the text. This is 33.3%. We also had discussion section attendance but our TA, Robin, was amazing because he never really took attendance. This was another 33.3%. The last 33.3% came from the final project. This project involves creating a fake scenario of an apocalyptic event that occurred in LA and forced people to leave. We had to take 10 photographs that were left behind in the aftermath and write 250 word captions for each image that beyond stating what the image contained. This was easy and super doable. I procrastinated until the last week and still got it done.
Overall I liked the class, the professor was good, and it's an easy A!
I cannot stress how EASY this class is. I am still taking this class but he is probably the only teacher who has ever asked the whole class GENUINLEY how was our day and talked about it. He deeply cares for students and is so funny. His lecture is very motivated for current events so we would talk about the election and our feelings instead. Assignments are very easy one or two reading reflection 200 words a week. then a final project that's taking 10 pictures and making our apocalypse, then writing 200 words for each picture. He is an amazing prof and if you need an easy class but also one that addresses current events and today's apocalypses please take this class 100% recommend.
