LS 15:
First of all, Phelan is really incredible. He is a wonderful lecturer, his slides are great, and he is very entertaining to listen to. The material was interesting and I actually enjoyed going to lecture.
HOWEVER, after taking practice tests over and over, the midterm was still VERY difficult. The highest grade in my class was an 84%. Luckily, the tests were curved.
Also make sure you get a really good TA, or the quizzes and debates will screw you over as well.
If you study very carefully, you should pass. I think it's worth it if you're interested in the material, because Phelan himself is wonderful.
LS 15:
Actual class title should be "Evolution, Sex, and Drugs"
No but really, as someone who is a hard core North Campus student with the scientific and mathematical abilities of a slightly above average chimpanzee, I must recommend this class if you're looking for a fantastic Life Science GE.
LS 15 is basically LS 1, 2, and 3 summarized and simplified.
Here are some topics you'll learn about in LS 15:
-DNA fingerprinting (based off actual classes he teaches to CIA agents)
-Why humans are so horny and why Americans are so fat.
-How to get people to do favors for you
-Why it sucks to be a teenager
-What makes people happy
-What Darwin was REALLY trying to teach people about evolution.
Yes, the class will be a bit of a challenge, but it's SO rewarding in the end. I must confess, I read almost none of the books (but took spectacular notes in lecture and section) and got away with a B+ in the end.
The midterms and final are definitely brutal but curved generously (my 61% raw score on the midterm ended up being the equivalent of a B-)
Professor Phelan is definitely an extraordinary human being whose love for teaching overflows every lecture.
I most definitely recommend taking this class; it's really a once in a lifetime chance.
**IGNORE THE ABOVE, I TOOK LS15**
Phelan was FABULOUS.
Life Science 15, dare I say it, may change your life. You'll learn more useful stuff than the life science majors do. Being able to take his class is a great opportunity, almost a privilege -- don't miss out on it!
That said, it's a little more difficult than most other GEs out there -- but DON'T let that stop you from taking it. His personal anecdotes will make you laugh, his teaching methods will help you learn, he will never make you memorize something without a good reason, his pictures will make you smile, and his take-home messages will stay with you forever and help you live a better life.
Oh, yeah -- when he tells you every lecture that you should go to his office hours, even if it's just to say hi...even if you don't consider yourself the office-hour type, you should actually go. I waited till the end of the quarter and I'm now kicking myself because he's not only a fountain of knowledge, but he'll talk to you like an old friend. If I'd visited hi earlier, I would've come back every week. Professors like this are becoming increasingly rare, so don't pass him by.
Well, that's all...nothing I write here could possibly do Jay Phelan and his class justice.
TAKE LS 15.
