Prager is the best sociology professor I've taken and I always felt very engaged in his lectures because he made them interesting and applicable to modern life.
I suggest going to all his lectures and your section , gathering the main points and doing research on the theorists we learn about in class. The readings are dense and not easy to interpret so after a little bit of Marx I decided to not even read any of the books for class and just read online about all their main ideas. I found a lot of people interpret the writings from class on YouTube so that was a really great resource for me when writing the class essay.
For the midterm and final I would review the main quotes and passages he pointed out in class for the fill in the blank section but as long as you understand the theorists idea's you can use common sense but if the idea isn't clear to you this is where many people loose points on his exams so really pay attention to all the words he writes on the board in class.
I ended up with an A so I think as long as you really understand the difference between Marx Weber Durkheim and Freud, read some of the main quotes from their writings and think critically, you can earn a good grade without having to read every single page.
Soc 101 with Prager wasn't difficult at all, even the lectures are pretty optional (I missed a fair amount). Discussion is mandatory and the class is broken into two papers, a midterm, and a final. The books for the class are really only necessary for having quotes in the papers, but the assigned readings can definitely be skipped (I personally despise dry academic reads). I used wikipedia and other internet sources to learn concepts for the tests more than anything. Just pay attention to your TA, they should tell you what you need to know.
Overall: This is, hands down, the best class I have ever taken in my undergraduate experience.
Material: It is very hard and difficult to interpret. Once Prager presents the material, however, your mind will be blown by the ideas that are discussed in this class. Social Theory is so amazing. The material will change your outlook on the world.
Professor: Professor Prager is such a nice, funny guy and truly cares about getting to know you. Very approachable in office hours.
Class Structure: Midterm and Final along with attendance.
How to do well in class (I got an A+):
1) Do the readings after reading summaries of the main ideas
2) Follow lectures as much as possible then re-watch them online while pausing for main points.
3) Studying: Make sure you understand the arguments of the readings and how the argument gets developed
Midterm/Final: Essay and Fill in the blank
Focus on the fill in the blank part! This is the most important part and throws everyone off. Bracket off the passages by author then book. Then bracket off the word bank by author then book. Then fill in the blanks.
Great professor. Very organized. Everything you need to know for the exams come from lecture - he will not surprise you with passages that he does not discuss (or passages that the TA does not discuss).
Midterm was short essays on Marx and Weber. Fill-in-the-blank questions from their works.
Take-home exam was paper on Durkheim and Marx.
Final exam was short essays on Durkheim and Freud. Fill-in-the-blanks on Durkheim and Freud. And finally, a comparative essay between Freud and Marx and/or Durkheim.
My scores:
Midterm: 88.1% (Studied the night before; was 2 fill-in-the-blanks out of 12? or 16? I forget - from a 92% ++) .
Paper: "B" (85%? Not sure...?)
Final exam: ??? I didn't study enough Freud... I don't know what I received.
There was a slight curve applied and I ended up with a B+ overall.
[By the way, I hated reading social theory. I managed somehow.]
Prof Prager is the best professor I have had at UCLA. His lectures were very interesting and it was easy to pay attention because he was never boring or dull. He made a great effortto help us understand the theorists that we were studying and did not mind repeating himself until we did. His tests were easy except for the fill in the blanks, but even those were doable. His papers were very straightforward and the TAs were awesome. I would recommend Prof Prager to students who have to take Soc 101 because the subject material is hard and it is important to have a prof who will be able to explain it clearly and effectively. I actually walked away from this class understanding Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Freud. I definetely recommend this Prof!!!
