JEREMY FREAKING TROTT IS THE GOATTT!!!! if you're going to let any review convince you to take this class, let it be this one. let me tell you, this was probably one of the easiest classes i have taken at ucla. if you're a psychobio major, as am i, and need to take this class for your major, do all you can to take it with trott. i've heard from people that their 100A class was challenging, but this was a complete walk in the park. the way this class is taught is close to perfection. pretty much everything is based in your textbook coursekata, which is basically just modules of chapters you can access through bruinlearn. these can be slightly tedious at times, but are genuinely so easy to complete on time, and you have lots of time to complete them at that. these chapters are your bread and butter. if you can understand them, you can pretty much ace the class. i was extremely intimidated coming from LS30A and LS30B. i have trauma from the code in those classes. they made me HATE coding so much so seeing that psych 100A was coding, i was quite scared to say the least. but let me tell you. easiest code EVER. this class uses 'R' which is so easy to learn and navigate and its not fake like 30B. and the textbook also holds your hand and walks you through it and makes it SO SIMPLE I LOVE IT. besides this, trott is such an amazing professor. he is just so reasonable and he really knows what he's teaching. you can tell he cares about his students. he also WANTS you to do well in this class and offers so much extra credit. i went to almost all the lectures and they were a little slow for my pace, since all you do is work together on some code (was still EXTREMELY helpful btw, just was a little repetitive at times). my only critique is the lab section of this class, did not particularly care for it and it wasn't really helpful, but it was still easy to go to. i really think trott is a truely kind man and i wish all the professors here were like him. he gets 5/5 stars from me. now go trott yourself to your class planner and enroll in this class!!!
1st things 1st; TAKE THIS CLASS WITH TROTT, DO NOT DEBATE ANYONE ELSE; TROTT IS THE BEST OF THE BEST. This class has got to be one of the easiest, most fun classes I have taken at UCLA as a psychobiology major. It was the first one obviously, of the psych classes and sometimes it has a reputation for being hard? I have never consistently done so well in a class and it just takes a little bit of effort to do that. The exams were never meant to trick you and I think they are extremely fair to the things Trott emphasizes in class and the way the CourseKata textbook is structured. The class is structured to that you primarily learn from the textbook and these ideas are reinforced through lecture---which I'd really recommend going to. There are tons of opportunity for extra credit through both attending all class and lab sections which are literally just free points. Furthermore, there is extra credit for sitting the front of lecture and answering questions (not as terrifying as I first thought it would be) and completing extra chapters; super easy too! Trott does all he can to ensure students really get the most they can from this class!
I personally had only taken one like intro stats class during high school and I did well on exams and learning all the coding and didn't need to rely on any prior knowledge to do so. The intimidating part of the class for me was learning R ,but it was SO SO SO SO EASY once we began and this fear was immediately relieved by my goat Jeremy Trott. So don't be worried about that! Not totally sure of my grade right now but probably an A or even A+ ???
Literally take it with him at all costs
If you really engage with the homework and textbook, it’s genuinely so easy — you just have to put in a tiny bit of effort. Professor Trott is genuinely a great and engaging teacher. If you build a relationship with him and ask good questions, this class is light!
Trott is an amazing professor. He makes this class very easy to learn. I heard from lots of people before that this class was hard, but Trott made it really easy and kind of fun.
Was not a fan of this class at all. I took it at my community college and actually enjoyed and understood it. The material in this class was so much harder for me to understand and we had to do coding with R. Was really hoping I could at least make an A- but it is what it is. The textbook is interactive and counts as the homework and wasn't too expensive (~$32). Dr. Trott gives a lot of extra credit which is really nice. He talks a lot in lecture which can be kind of overwhelming. I feel like I haven't even processed what he just said before he's on to the next topic. I will say that he always responds to emails and is always willing to help though. There are two midterms and a final and you're allowed a cheatsheet. Really wish this class wasn't required for psych :/
This class was pretty standard for a statistics class, but you also have to learn R. The lectures are "not required" because there were two grading schemes, one where the midterm and final were worth more, and one where submitting the Jupyters completed in class was also included, and the midterm/final were worth a little less. I still went to lecture, but if you hadn't done the textbook readings prior to class, it was super easy to get lost. The professor talks a lot in between the parts where we're actually coding, so I fell asleep a lot...
The textbook CourseKata was pretty good - it would teach you things, and you had to code along and fill in these code blocks. It did cost $32 :(. Each chapter took a long time to do (between 1 hour and 1.5 hours!!!), and we had to do about 1 chapter a week, but I always learned a lot and didn't need to study as much for the exams because I was constantly learning throughout the entire quarter. R isn't too complicated and the textbook really holds your hand you barely even do any coding. The review questions at the end of the chapter were pretty similar to what was on the midterms and final.
The midterms were online using Jupyter Notebook, but the final was on paper due to the professor catching people cheating and looking up answers online during the midterms... You do get a 1 page cheat sheet too so idk why people were cheating.. He also included extra credit questions on the midterms/final. I got 100% on the first midterm and 95% on the second, but that may have also been because I've taken so many statistics classes already (AP Statistics, Comm 150).
Also there is sooo much opportunity for extra credit. Attend more than 6 discussions, sit in the front row and answer questions, participate in studies, do extra textbook chapters, etc. all gave you a grade boost.
I was really impressed with Professor Trott. He was definitely one of the best teachers I have had. He is very good at instructing a large lecture and explaining confusing topics in a way that makes sense. I really like the textbook, much more engaging that reading a traditional textbook.
This is hands down the best class I've taken at UCLA. My final grade isn't confirmed yet but right now I have an A+/A in this class. Both midterms and final are open note, in-person class is optional, and you only need to attend 3 discussions to get full credit--the more you attend the more extra credit you receive. He offers almost too many extra credit opportunities, and it boosts your grade by whole percentage points, not partial. He's funny, engaging, and everything on the tests are literally on the homework. Homework is based on completion not correctness. The only 'downside' (which isn't a downside unless you make it that way) is that each test is 25% of your grade, so if you fail a test you'll have to try harder in the other ones to boost your grade. However, you shouldn't really fail unless you don't try or don't understand the homework. Overall, he is a very understanding teacher and you'd quite literally have to not try to fail this class. Trust you will come out learning so much!
Trott is a great professor who clearly explains the content of 100a and is very understanding for any issues that may come up during the quarter. The class's content is not very difficult, and the lectures are very clear and offer all the information needed for the exams. I definitely recommend taking this class with Trott, as he is super friendly, funny, and kind.
Like so funny and weird class. Each time that you get a correct answer you get a ridiculous encouragement. I never went to lectures but I still mostly managed even though I am not a big coding person. I highly recommend taking stats 10 before this class so that you have a good R background. Also the professor was funny. The labs are dumb though hahah. Not that much work mostly doing the textbook.
