I took this class with Galic and Zack in spring 2022. Honestly my favorite class I’ve taken at UCLA and I’m an MCDB major. I totally recommend this class if you’re willing to work hard to understand everything. Galic is an amazing professor and is very concerned with student learning. Zach is definitely a very smart man and is very knowledgeable, but breezes through the lectures very quickly and is not as clear. Galic uses the full lecture time (1 hour 15 mins) and Zach would finish only 45 mins in. Because of this, I always left Zach’s lectures very confused and unsure. To remedy this, I would go to Galic’s office hours. He just reviews the past two lectures, but he focuses on reviewing Zach’s lectures more. This was extremely helpful and I seriously recommend going to these office hours weekly. The midterm and final are extremely short on time but open note, so I recommend making a comprehensive document that you can command F to find anything you might have forgotten about. The tests are not about memorization as much as understanding, so some people really struggle but others can exceed easily. Left the final thinking that I’ve learned more in this class than most classes I’ve taken at UCLA! Very much recommend taking it with Galic and Zach.
Dr. Zack is a great professor. I took him during the one quarter that he co-taught with Dr. Galic (Dr. Morrison retired last minute I think) and I absolutely loved them together as professors. Zack is very knowledgeable, very passionate, and he's a GOOD TEACHER, which is the most important part. Sometimes he speaks kind of quickly, but he's really good at gauging the class and being able to tell if he should go back over a concept that he can tell the class isn't understanding, even if nobody raises their hand and tells them to. He just reads the class well, which is really nice. He is also very enthusiastic during OH and will gladly go over difficult concepts again and again until people get it. He's also pretty funny and likes to tell little dorky stories during class. He's also like, one of the pioneers of HIV research... another acclaimed UCLA professor that is super down to earth and really concerned about student learning! He's awesome.
I don't know how you guys are but, I really think Morrison is a much better lecturer. The class is definitely hard but man, Zack is really monotone. He just read straight out of his slides nothing new, nothing clarify. Morrison is so much better. She is much more enthusiatic and much more passionate about immunology. But he is sincere try his best to make the stuffs easier to the point he might repeat over and over the same stuffs.
mimg 185A is definitely one of those classes that require a LOT of studying but is worth taking because it is very INTERESTING and the professors are wonderful. okay, let's get things straigthened out, this class is definitely not easy, but if you want to actually LEARN something IMPORTANT in your so many years stay UCLA, you should definitely take this class. both dr. morrison and dr. zack are very good professors - knowledgeable and very approachable. the course reader was definitely helpful too - esp. during the midterm and the final. and lastly, if you ever pick a TA for discussion, pick JAY DELA CRUZ. he is like the immunology GOD, who actually takes time to help his students and is very very very NICE and VERY smart and very entertaining. i'm not kidding. i have had people from different discussion sessions sit in my discussion every single time just for JAY's lecture. I definitely loved MIMG 185A - even though it did take up much of my sleep time and somewhat of my social life -why shouldn't I, i got my money's worth and I walked out of the class much more knowledgeable.
Almost everyone will tell you that this class is hard. For me, it was in a sense easier than some of the other microbio classes. It's very concept and problem solving based, and surely there are many ways to approach the problems. However, the number of concepts you have to understand is not that much. Once you grasp them and know where to look for details in the reader, you are in good shape.
Dr. Zack's office hours really help. He's a very approachable person with no attitude at all. He tends to go through the same concepts over and over again during office hours, so attending office hours is actually a good way to prepare for the exams.
