I took this class online asynchronously so that may skew my experiences with the class, but nonetheless, I only have good things to say about Professor Collett and the course. Lectures and readings, while abundant, were clearly organized and easy to follow- I dedicated friday evenings to getting the whole subsequents week’s worth of notes, readings, engagement checks, and hw done with no issues. The midterm and final were open all day but were timed once begun. The midterm was a little tricky but the final was a piece of cake. Didn’t study for either and my average exam grade was a 95. Again, being able to have my lecture and reading notes available obviously allowed me to not have to extensively prepare. My biggest advice is take notes on the readings as you go, don’t be like me and take notes for 20+ readings each right before the exam(s). The reviews of this class seem to be predominantly from STEM majors calling this class a difficult GE, if nog the most difficult. As a newly switched sociology major, this class was my highest grade to date and was enjoyable beginning to end… I actually feel like I’ve learned and retained some valuable information (contrary to what some may say). Definitely recommend taking this class with Professor Collett!!
This is a great course to take if you're seeking internship credit. There are no classes, just 5 bi-weekly meetings with a graduate student instructor. The graduate student is the one who will be evaluating your work. Each week there are 1-2 readings, and you're required to do a write-up each week on the readings. Your write-ups require you to incorporate elements from the reading to your internship site, and each week you begin to write components of your final paper. Because of this, you end up having most of your final paper completed by week 9 which makes completing it fairly easy. You need to conduct one interview with someone from your internship site and incorporate the interview into your final essay. As long as you do the readings each week and come up with a solid topic for your paper, you're baically guaranteed an A.
This class is amazing! Whether you're looking for a Social Analysis GE, interested in Sociology, or taking this for a Comm lower-division class, I highly recommend. The lectures are extremely well thought-out, interesting, and perfectly paced. The professor is amazing, and she is the chair of the Sociology department so she is a great person to know if you are considering studying Sociology. There were weekly challenges that were fairly easy if you engaged with the materials, easy weekly discussion boards that only took a few minutes, and (long but not hard) midterm and final. The only drawback to this class is the length of the readings, but they are interesting and easy nonetheless!
I took the class during the Covid-19 lockdown, so it was all online. I found the class to be interesting and the material to be digestible. The things I didn't particularly enjoy were the readings. Perhaps it was due to the nature of the summer session, but there were so many readings to be covered. You'd think it'd be easier over the summer, but I didn't find it so.
The class was super interesting and she's one of the best lecturers I've ever met! She explains in 20-40 minutes what would take many professors more than an hour and is very clear and concise. That being said, midterm and final are pretty tough. The multiple choice is arguably the hardest part. However, as long as you do all the assignments and do the extra credit, it should be able to make up your grade just fine.
Collett is an AMAZING professor who provides a ton of examples, which makes the lectures engaging and applicable to your personal life. I learned so much in this course and truly enjoyed going to class. Grades are divided between section participation, class iClicker quizzes/participation (lowest 5 you get to drop), a midterm and final and a very brief 2-3 page paper relating the course concepts to your own life. You have to read the textbook to do well on the exams and iClicker quizzes, but the readings are quite short. Collett is a VERY engaging, understanding professor and I am so glad I got to be her student. Honestly the best course I’ve taken at UCLA.
Dr. Collett and her TA's: super helpful, extremely engaging, and the readings are just so relevant. Yes, there is a textbook in this class, but if I had the money, I would honestly buy it. It is so interesting to see how the social construction of one's self operates in society under different theories and views. All these theories intertwine with each other and it can become addicting if you start to analyze life under a sociological lens! Reminds me why I wanted to study Sociology in the first place! Dr. Collett does a phenomenal job paralleling the concepts learned in class to everyday life. Sometimes the way she can describe a concept can get confusing since she is trying to put it on simple terms for us. Remember to be a good student and ask questions whenever this happens!
To do well in the class, you have to actively engage with the readings! This is important on many different levels because you have clicker quizzes, and the midterm & final will ask how readings assigned with certain sections of the class correlate with each other. Probably sounds like a no brainer, but remember to read and take good notes of the readings. You can use your notes for the clicker quizzes, and it will help when you start to review for the midterm and final. Although the content, methodology, and the discussion of the readings of a certain day are important, knowing why the readings are assigned to each other for that day of lecture are so important - big time for the midterm and final!
The last thing I have to say about Dr. Collett is that she genuinely cares about her students' success in her class. She makes sure if her students have a general understanding of what is being asked in her quizzes. If something she asks is not explicit enough, she might drop the question. She highly encourages going to her office hours in case something is not clear.
Take her class! You will not regret it!
Professor Collett gives great lectures, and she’s very well prepared and organized. The book comes in handy in this class and if you do all the readings, you’ll be fine on the midterm and final. One thing I’ll say, is that she’s not the most helpful teacher and she can be kind of intimidating to approach. When Ibhad the experience to speak to her one on one a couple times, she she was pretty rude and I felt rushed, and I know other students who also felt the same way. I still think the class is worth taking because it’s really interesting and her lectures are good but if you need to speak with someone about the material, it’s probably better to consult with your TA because she doesn’t really try to help and she can be really condescending when you ask her questions.
By far one of the greatest professors I have encountered at UCLA. Her lectures are very engaging and the material is very interesting.
