This class was not necessarily difficult but it was overwhelming loaded with readings, but that is expected for this kind of class. The weekly quizzes are based off the readings and lectures from that week so those are easy points (25 quizzes, drops lowest 5). I am a TERRIBLE test taker, especially when it's timed, so the first mini quiz and midterm were not my best work. However, I was able to bounce back and did pretty well on my final! Overall, I recommend taking this class. It was very interesting and engaging! Just be aware, if you are looking for an easy GE this may not be the class for you.

This class isn't easy, but it was worth taking in my opinion. I was really interested in the class content and felt that the class was very eye-opening. Each week's work would usually only take me around 5-6 hours. The exams aren't easy, but if you study how she recommends (only taking down main points from readings, understanding key terms, connecting concepts and readings), you'll be fine. I'm selling the textbook too! Text me at ********** if you're interested.

The workload in this class is definitely sizable some weeks but realistically it is also very manageable! Professor Collett is really the nicest and even started releasing material earlier for us to get a head start on in the week (this helps out with the workload a lot). I feel like the main reason why people may complain that the workload is on the heavier side is bc since this is an asynchronous course, "attending" (watching) lecture videos can feel like extra work when in reality, its the same thing as attending a normal lecture session (usually there are 2-3 lectures per week, each one ranging from 15-30 min, so in reality its rly short compared to a normal lecture). As long as you take advantage of this head start and spread out this work over the week, there should be no issues with an extremely heavy workload (I usually just got all the work for this class done over the weekend so I didn't have to worry about it for for the next few days).

Some of people tended to have difficulty with the midterms and final but I think the point distribution that is used was really forgiving and fair. Prof also offers rly insightful review sessions before the test and drops questions that a majority of the class got wrong afterwards. There are weekly readings/quizzes/lectures that are assigned and at times it did seem like quite a bit but truthfully the material is interesting enough that it really doesn't feel like it. The quizzes mainly test on main ideas, so copious notes aren't necessary and they're overall pretty low stakes.

Overall, I would highly recommend this class (esp if you wanna develop a better social awareness)! I know its cheesy when people say that they'll take the stuff they learn in a class with them for life, but I genuinely think that this course really changed the way I think about life/society! :)

A lot more work than expected, if your other classes aren't too much work then you'll be fine. 2 midterms and the final make up most of your grade along with 25 quizzes that you take every week (5 lowest dropped). Exams require some studying.

Took this as a online class. There are discussions and quizzes every week, they don't require that much effort, as long as you put in the time for readings and write content it will be fine. There is a midterm and a final, but both are not hard as long as you do the necessary readings and review.
Needs a textbook, readings are very important and sometimes requires a bit of time. Other than that, professor is a GREAT person, replies to any questions for emails, and grades very tolerantely. GREAT class, highly recommend.

this was literally the best class i've taken so far at ucla. because of covid, everything was online. but despite that, professor collett made sure to make herself very accessible to students and gave multiple opportunities (ex. extra credit for completing course evaluations/feedback ) to ensure students would do well. i felt super comfortable with emailing her with any concerns i had about my grade/issues accessing the online lectures (they're all recorded). i learned so much about what sociology is and why it's important to society. i believe that every person should take at least one sociology class during their time in college because of how much it broadens your world perspective. this class was such a great experience that i even decided to double major in soc. the course load itself is really doable, just make sure you do the readings (which i found to be really interesting so it shouldn't be a hard read) and then you'll do great on the quizzes and tests. at first i thought the quizzes were hard (around 3-5 weekly) but they ended up helping my grade. anyways 10/10 would recommend this course to everyone !!
