Ma is a boring montone professor.
3C is a pointless class whose syllabus after the 3rd or 4th week has nothing to do with any of the physics or LS series.
This class is one of those "You've gotta get through it" type. A lot of SELF-STUDY and even then some things will be confusing.
HIS TESTS:
Relatively easier compared to Sinclair. All 3C profs are bad. He's like the least worst. But he's still pretty bad.
He was definitely my least favorite professor of the 3 series. His accent sometimes made it hard to understand him in lecture. His lectures were essentially verbatim from the book, examples and all, and combined with the fact that the classroom had no AC and was unbearably warm, it was easy to just fall asleep.
He only had one midterm, which I didn't like, but it wasn't that difficult. The final, on the other hand, was definitely harder and the average was around 60%.
My friend went to his office hours a lot and said that he's very nice. He just isn't a very good professor. About half way through the quarter I stopped going to lecture and just took notes from the book and ended up with an A-.
Recommend him, seriously. Despite his accent he really makes himself clear, and most importantly he seldom makes calculation mistakes. His grading policy is fair and midterms not hard. I suffered Burke, so I know how well Prof Ma teaches.
Professor Ma is the worst professor I've had during my first year at UCLA. He seriously sucks. Most students say that 33A is way easier than 32B, but with Ma as my professor, 33A was horrible.
His lectures are straight out of the book and he has a thick accent. There's absolutely no reason to go to lecture. Just read out of the book, go to discussion, and do a lot of practice problems.
On top of that, he's rude and mean. Just don't go to class.
Bad accent, worse teaching, straightforward tests.
Grading is 20/40/40 or 20/20/60 HW/Midterm/Final. Weekly homeworks are about 25 problems apiece.
He's bad, but not the worst out there. Thankfully, 33A is a class where you can self-study for the most part and do well. Having a good TA makes all the difference in this class-- go to discussion!
