I really like reality TV so i took this class thinking it would be interesting but i was wrong. while professor jusko seems nice he was in fact very condescending and loves to hear himself talk. this class is almost three hours at night and he took up the entire time talking. his reality tv references are dated like survivor and biggest loser, we never once touched on anything from 2024 like The Kardashians or anything Bravo related. It was really hard to take notes on his lectures because there was no structure i didnt even know where to start when writing. the attendance is ridiculous, he randomly takes it at 3 lectures throughout the quarter, so if you miss those that sucks for you. while the midterm and final are disguised to seem like fun "design your own reality show" papers, he just wants you to regurgitate facts that he has dolled out during his 3 hour monologues. also his tone is patronizing.
I enjoyed Comm 188A with Professor Jusko. The class consisted of a midterm paper and final paper. The midterm focused on creating your own nonscripted reality tv show and the final paper was to work out how the show would be produced. The papers were graded easily. I recommend going to office hours to ask about what to include for each section so you don't lose points. Lecture was once a week for three hours. The only downside was lecture from 6pm-8:50pm, and some weeks the lectures were tedious. Jusko takes attendance three times the entire quarter but does not tell you when. Attendance is a big chunk of your grade so make sure you go. The content of the class was interesting. Take this class if you enjoy learning about film production or just want something fun to take. Prof. Jusko also brought in guest lecturers who worked on show productions which were pretty interesting.
Professor Jusko is a gem. His lectures are entertaining, and he is clearly passionate about his work. He brings in guest lecturers who are currently in the entertainment industry to speak to the class. They all have different backgrounds which helps students better understand what part of the industry they may want to learn more about or go into after graduating. The class's topic, Non-Scripted Television, is really interesting. I wasn't very interested in reality TV before, but he sure does make it sound cool. He's a casual guy who just wants students to enjoy themselves. He requires participation but says, "If i call on you and you didn't read this week, just let me know and I won't judge you... it's fine." I barely did the readings, BUT the ones I did do were very interesting (and short... I should have read more). The only assignments in this class are a midterm essay and a final essay (each around 5-6 pages). He prepares you well for them (for the most part) and grades well. He doesn't want to see anybody do badly, so if you need help, just talk to him right after class. He's not on campus much, so when he does have time to talk, go! Overall, a super fun class, not too hard, and helpful for figuring out life if you want to go into media or entertainment.
