This class was AMAZING, and I highly recommend it to anyone! Professor Newton is so knowledgable, and he really makes an effort to involve the entire class rather than just lecture for an hour and a half. During the entire class time period, I was fully engaged just solely because of his passion and experience with the material. The readings weren't too difficult, and the exams just require you to bring up examples he discussed during lecture so they were never too bad. As long as you analyze well enough, you'll do fine. He also led the LA Times case on the OJ Simpson case if that isn't enough to convince anyone to take this class?! Literally, one of the most applicable and interesting courses I've taken at UCLA.
Amazing class. Professor Newton is an absolute gem. Easily one of the best professors at UCLA. His class is structured fairly meaning if you pay attention and take detailed notes you are guaranteed to ace the midterm and final. Professor Newton is polite, caring, and helpful. He is always there to help and is very respectful of opposing views and tries to present balanced perspectives on topics. Overall, take this class with Newton and you will not regret it. My only sadness is that this class is not the entire year! Also, the textbook is pointless! Save your money!
Professor Newton is a knowledgeable and charismatic professor who knows how to teach. He presents course material in a way that is interesting and causes students to ask questions and stay engaged. His expectations for the class are excellent and the course work is ideal for an upper division class. I would take another class by Professor Newton!
Love this man! The lectures seriously make you want to be a journalist (I kept calling this class ethics of journalism because it was easier and I wasn’t wrong). You don’t need the textbook, but it is nice to have if you don’t quite understand a topic he taught during lecture. Ask him questions! Go to his office hours! I would definitely take another class taught by him. Also, the exams are short answer/3 short paragraph for each question but don’t let that scare you. He is such a great professor and the material is straight forward, all you’ll need to do is go through notes once or twice and you’ll do fine!
Comm 187 by Newton was of my favorite classes I have ever taken. The class is an absolute pleasure to be a part of. Newton is clear, precise, and honest about what he expects. Do not waste your money or time buying the textbook because it's pointless to have. The readings that you have to do are usually articles he posts. Attendance is vital. The class is based on participation, a midterm, and final. The midterm and final are composed of 7 short answers questions and you can pick 5. Each question is typically half a page long. But the questions are comically easily so long as you take really detailed notes and attend class. Your success in this class is dependent on whether or not you take amazing notes. I recorded his lectures and relistened them before the exams and made a huge difference cause sometimes he goes quickly in class. Overall, amazing class and professor.
One of my favorite professors/classes by far- I wish I could have taken more classes with him! Take this class, especially if you want to get into journalism! As long as you show up to class, take good notes and read the articles, the tests are really easy- no surprises. Lectures are extremely well-organized, he focuses on one major concept at a time, so it makes studying for exams easy because they prettymuch consist of one question per concept. The only thing to keep in mind with the exams is your answers need to be 2-3 paragraphs each, so you need to keep track of time because it will likely take you the whole class time to finish. When you take notes, you want to get the factual details down and write down his examples (the online readings usually are related to his examples, but it's way easier to know them if you get the information in class because he breaks them down really well). I read the textbook, which basically covers all the same stuff as class- you might get a few extra details for each topic, but you really don't need to read the book, just take good notes and do the online readings.
TAKE THE DAMN CLASS! BEST MAN EVER!!! SUPER SWEET AND NICE! SUPER EASY CLASS! I would take this class again if I could.
Just go to lecture, take good notes, regurgitate the info which is mostly common sense on the midterms and you'll be 100% fine! He can even accommodate your exam conflicts. The nicest and most chill and most knowledgable man I have ever met! Also, if you want to go into journalism, would be a great guy to get a letter of rec from! The material was also relevant to current issues and was interesting (coming from a non-comm major)
1 midterm 45%
1 Final 45%
participation 10% (basically be there which you have to to take notes)
Professor Newton has been my favorite professor in the Comm. Department so far! His lectures are engaging, interesting, informative, and easy to follow. He's also easily accessible through his office hours if you need clarity on a topic covered in class. His tests consist of straightforward written response questions (you choose 5 of 8 to respond to) and all of the material is stuff covered both in lecture and in the assigned reader. If you're looking for a good elective, take this!
This course covers the ethics of journalism. Professor Newton is always on time and well dressed. He gives PTE codes like crazy so get on his good side early on. I never paid attention in class and crammed when studying for the midterm the night before and got a 95%. Even if you just show up to class and just listen to what he has to say you will realize that its interesting and then want to take some notes on the case studies. Overall, very easy class and nice professor.
