I just finished taking Geog 152. Prof Agnew is great. If you like geography or just the subject of European Cities you should take the class. The class's lectures are interesting and hes a good speaker (no monotone or boring bleh ness). He genuinely cares and is available. I wish I had gone to his office hours sooner. The class is based on just a midterm and final, both of which are take home. He gives a list of questions a week in advance and then he picks two questions and thats the test. But if you've gone to lectures and done some of the readings you'll be fine. Hes a really good professor and very nice.
I'd rather be friends with Agnew than take another class with him. EASY but boring. I attended probably half of the lectures, got a 92 on the take home midterm essay which I wrote in about an hour and a half and ended up with an A- in the class. Again, easy and somewhat informative, and Agnew is a nice guy, it's just that lecture can be painfully boring.
What an amazing Professor!
At first I was a bit intimidated by his reading load, which was huge, but it tolerable in light of the lectures. The lectures not only are informative, but with his dry English wit are hilarous. He is very concerned that you understand and he is open to questions. It is obvious is is quite liberal in his views, and he does have an opinion, though he does not ram it down your throat. If you have interest in Europe at all, this class will be beneficial to you, plus you will get to take a course from one of UCLA's finest!
Agnew is a great professor! I really enjoyed his extensive knowledge about Europe, European cities and geography. His lectures are intriguing and is a definite bonus that he has a sense of humor during class. We had no exams - we had 3 papers to write throughout the quarter. Thus, the readings and lectures notes are important in doing well in class. The papers really make you think about European cities in various different aspects. I definite recommend anyone into urban studies/policy, geography and even political science to take this class.
I'm not a Geography major, but Urbanization of European Cities pertained to my field of study. I was apprehensive going into the class, but Prof. Agnew really made the subject intersting and all-encompassing. We didn't talk just about "geography" but about social, economic, political and industrial forces and consequences of urbanization in major cities in Europe. The best part about this class is that there are no exams. There are three 5-page papers which really make you think. The papers do require you to pay a lot of attention to the readings as well as lectures. Agnew is a funny guy and really brings this subject to life.
