Dropped his class after the first section HE ACTUALLY ATTENDED. The man cancelled the first class and didn't show up to the second one (even though the entire class was there) -- he forgot to email the class to say he was sick. Despite the fact that I wasted a day of work to be there.
The first class was a joke. He didn't even have a prepared lecture, he just expected the class to discuss 3 Ejemplos that 75% of them didn't even have the book for (because he only emailed the syllabus to the class the night before). He told the class at the beginning that he doesn't allow laptops or cell phones in class because ... (and I quote) "Many Faculty including myself believe that if we are totally here for you, you should be totally here for us..." Despite the fact that students PAY to be there and he IS PAID to be there.
After class I told him that I had an issue with the date of the final and I was wondering if I could try and work something out with the department. In both the Spanish and French departments I have been able to or have had classmates who were able to work something out. It has become really common with interdepartmental majors (I'm Comp Lit) who only have a few choices for classes of which a large majority have finals that overlap. He interrupted me before I could even explain the situation and burst a flat out "NO."
Really concerned about student learning? Totally there for his students? Definitely Not. His response capitulated an hour and a fifty minutes of hypocrisy, the likes of which I have never seen on this campus. After leaving that class I was embarrassed for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Luckily, I was fortunate to find another class that fit busy my schedule, but learned the lesson never to waste my time with this department employee again.
