This is seriously the WORST class i have ever taken at UCLA. lecture = 2 hours of torture where Hall just goes on and on about bs nobody cares about. He's so pedantic too! He thinks he's all scholarly because he knows tidbits about famous composers' lives... which by the way can be found in the textbook. He straight up reads stuff like that off the textbook and acts like he knows everything. He's also a psychotic guy. Out of nowhere he would yell at us or pick out specific people and tell him/her to stop eating or talking or whatever in front of 500 people. His tests are impossible! On the midterm, he gave us less than a minute to listen to the sample and answer 4-5 questions like who is the composer? when was it written? what style is it? Oh and there's a pop quiz that's worth 25 points so you pretty much have to go to lecture. I seriously did not learn a thing in this class. I'm an A student and I do well in all my classes, but this class is just ridiculous and a serious waste of time.
This guy is horrible. He made music 15 into a hard class. Bring Chapman back!!! He made me hate music and hate going to his class. The midterm was extremely difficult and the class is not curved. Good luck getting an A or even passing this class. If you are not a music major stay away or your regret it.
Hall can be a good lecturer on his good days but if he's cranky, watch out. If he's pissed, he'll take on an I-don't-care-attitude and students are the ones that suffer. One time he was giving our class a quiz, but being as brilliant as he is, he only brought 450 quizzes for a class with an enrollment of 463. He simply shrugged and growled "Share!" I had to try and read off the quiz of the person who sat in front of me. I hate him now.
