This man is a chiller. If you can, take the class with Pang. All the information is clearly presented and the instructions for the labs were very sufficient. He is accomodating for conflicts and is always willing to help.
But overall, I think who your TA is definitely affects you so make sure you get a good TA. My TA was Bocheng and he was super great with grading. He wasn't nitpicky with points on the HW and Labs, and made exceptions to the late policy. Although he wasn't great at responding to emails and his lab lectures were kinda dry, I'd take it with him again.
The class is laid out with 5 main components: lab section, hw, lab reports, one essay, and exams.
The LAB SECTION is just a ~40 minute lecture by your TA on the weeks material and you go into a breakout room with a student and do a couple practice problems for ~10 minutes. You don't have to get the right answers and you can leave whenever. It might be daunting to have 2 and a half hour of lab on MyUCLA, but dw it never takes more than an hour.
The HW is usually pretty easy, takes half an hour to an hour, and is due every Tuesday. You "watch" a lecture (voice-over in a powerpoint) and then answer some questions.
The LABS are probably the most difficult/time consuming by far. It's pretty self-explanatory, but he gives you very detailed instructions on what to do. The GroupMe will be your best friend to check your work because they do grade by accuracy. Sometimes the labs will take 30 minutes, sometimes they'll take 4 hours, but usually theyre in the ballpark of 1-2 hours.
The ESSAY is pretty easy I guess. Our prompt was on an oximeter (covid), but the prompts will prob be different in the future. He gave up to 5 points of EC (on a 20 point assignment) which is pretty nice.
The midterm and final "quizzes" are much more extensive than quizzes but oh well. We had 24 hours on them, so while it was lengthy, I was able to complete it to the best of my ability. The questions were fully covered in the material so it wasn't that hard at all.
Dr. Pang is a pretty good professor. Although I don't think I remember much of lecture because I was sleepy at 8 AM on Thursdays. For lab courses, you usually interact more with your TA.
Pros
- Midterm (online) was similar to the problem sets and was straightfoward.
- Labs were concise in terms of instructions
- He's very helpful, kind, and understanding - I went to his office hour once to ask a question about a post-lab report calculation and he made sure to clarify it enough for me
- For the most part, your lab grades should help buffer your grade for the midterm/final
- Lectures were clear and usually had a lot of examples. He would also write on the board to solidify concepts.
Cons
- I think in general, 14BL is notorious for being picky on the graph titles and significant figures. On one of my lab reports, I got 20.5/30 because of this.
- 14BL also is defined by a bunch of busy work - pre-lab and post-lab reports, recording in-lab data on a lab notebook
- Sometimes you may be asked to do a group lab report - this was hit-or-miss depending on who you work with
- Final was very conceptual based and lab-based. I mean this in the sense that on the midterm, it felt more computational/solving problems, but the final asked more questions of "why did this student produce an inaccurate result during the _____ lab". I was slightly thrown off because I expected it to be similar to the midterm. There were a few buffer/acid-base equilibrium pH computation problems though! Most of the final (which was in-person) was Multiple Choice.
Overall, 14BL is a not-so-fun class, but Dr. Pang makes it manageable.
Pang is the best. I really enjoyed this class, mainly because the professor is so caring and helpful to the students. He had office hours everyday which helped immensely and was always willing to answer whatever question no matter how stupid. Chem14Cl is notoriously a hard class but taking it with this professor made it one of my favorite classes since I felt like the work I put in directly correlated to how I did in the class and the professor and TAs I interacted with were all kind and helpful. I appreciated how he always came to check on how the labs were going during lab periods too. Also the study guides are very helpful and I really appreciate the detail put into them. If only every professor was like you Pang, I'm gonna miss you <3 Also thanks for the candy on halloween and during office hours :)
Pretty easy class since most material is review from Chem 14A/B. Midterm was very easy while the final was slightly difficult. Pre- and post-lab reports are easy if you follow directions but are time-consuming since they're hand-written in your lab notebook. There are also some group lab reports which can be annoying to schedule. Pang is a homie though; he prints slides for every lecture and is so cute and funny!
Prof. Pang is so nice and funny and clearly cares about his students. Labs and reports were tedious but mostly just busy work. Fairly easy midterm and final as material is mostly from 14A and B. Definitely recommend this professor and taking it during the summer.
I just want to emphasize how incredibly accommodating Dr. Pang was during all of the crazy events that happened during Spring 2020. He and his TAs modified Chem 14CL and developed amazing online materials to make it an appropriate online class. This class was definitely not hard but I feel like I learned a lot, which I'm happy about!
Professor Pang was so great. The material is a lot of review from A and B.
The tests can be kind of difficult but the study guides help a lot! The midterm was very similar to the study guide. He answers any questions that you may have and will go over things again in office hours if you need help with it!! 10/10 would recommend to take BL with Pang.
I had a very positive experience taking Pang for 14CL, especially after hearing horror stories about Henary. The three hour labs 2 times a week honestly sounded overwhelming, however, its not as bad as some weeks it's just one lab that requires possible 4 hours total. Other weeks we didn't even have to meet for the other section or it would only last 1 hour if you were efficient.
The pre and post lab reports were a decent amount of work but the midterm and final were very reasonable if you studied all the content.
Additionally if you have a good lab TA like I did (king Brandon Jolly), then you should have close to 100% in you lab category. I ended up only needing to get around a 66% on my final to get an A because the requirement for an A is 90%.
Professor Pang teaches very clearly, and is one of the last few good chem professors left as the UCLA chem department falls to shambles.
Amazing class! Definitely recommend taking this concurrently with 20B as it definitely helps bring the concepts to life.
The class is a lot of work- you have weekly prelabs, postlabs, a small "essay" later in the quarter that provides extra credit as well as midterm and a final. However, the work isn't necessarily difficult as long as you follow all of the instructions and maybe even check with your friends. Stay on top of things and you'll be fine!
*I took this class during COVID-19*
Dr. Pang is amazing!
I was a bit worried at first when I heard that Pang was doing asynchronous lectures, but 20L quickly became one of my favorite and most refreshing classes for the reasons provided:
1. All of the slideshows, procedures, instructions, and extra resources on CCLE were all SUPER CLEAR, precise, and easy to follow.
2. The midterm and final quizzes were both very fair, as the problems very much resembled the example problems on the slideshows and what was done in labs.
3. Dr. Pang is extremely responsive and helpful in office hours, and always goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material.
4. He is also very quick to respond to emails, and sends out frequent email updates about assignments.
5. Dr. Pang welcomes beginners! It is not intimidating to ask him even simple-sounding questions. He truly wants his students to succeed.
