He tends to repeat himself over and over again, sometimes it's good but sometimes it got quite annoying.
Lecture material isn't that hard, just basic gen chem stuff.
Midterm: make sure you do practice problems he posts. Our average was 59% and it's straight scale, i believe only about 10 students or so got an A.....
Final: He asked some ridiculous question like "wt does NFPA stand for?" & "For log, wt is the decimal of the number to the right of the decimal point called"....other than that it was pretty straightforward...but in one of the questions he intentionally tricked us.. so make sure you read the question VERY carefully
Make sure you get old lab reports from someone somehow...
I got an A and partly because I did well on midterm and i got old reports..... make sure you study ALL the material in the lecture notes, and practice calculations (which isn't that much compared to most other classes)
Pang taught me more chemistry than my chem professor for 20B. Yes he does go a little fast but he goes over material very efficiently. I thought I was going to fail because I bombed the midterm, BUT I managed to get a B+ because the final was super easy!! Seriously, the class is pretty straightforward and you can't blame the crappy labs on the professor because they use the same labs every year.
Overall, Pang is a good lecturer and professor. Reasonable and to the point. I mean, give the guy some credit. He has only an hour of lecture a week to cover all the material for the class, and I doubt that other professors would teach Chem 20L any better. Also, he's almost always available, as I constantly bombarded him with (what probably seemed to him as stupid and obvious) questions haha, but going to office hours really helped solidify my comprehension of the labs--which is SOO crucial. Especially if you didn't copy lab reports. To tell you the truth, the number of students who actually copied from old lab reports is probably overrated, as most students from my lab discussion didn't copy. Even if you do, it won't help you much in the long run on the exams. The best way to do well in the class is to write up your own lab reports and go to office hours. Also, pray that you have a nice TA because, I had a pretty nitpicky TA that would take off a lot of points on labs--which made the whole class experience pretty miserable as I constantly worried about my grade. I did very well on the midterm, and bombed the final. But in the end I got an A, I guess Pang lowered the scaling for the final... because DUDE the final was difficult.
I have to take this guy again for 30AL this spring quarter... but he's not that bad as some people say. He's a great lecturer, albeit really fast. The labs are naturally a pain in the ass; my ass singed in pain after each lab. It still hurts. However, you can make the pain go away a lot if you have a great TA who is chill. Overall , it doesn't matter what grade you get in this class, as long as you pass the class, since this class is a huge workload that you do not want to repeat again. Just make sure you passed; seriously, I was happy with a B.
Pang is seriously not that bad. He is a really nice guy. I was late to my lab and I was really scared but somehow I got to make up the lab. (but all in all you should not be late to your lab, it REALLY screws your grade up, listen up for people in 8AM class). His class is composed of PreLab, post lab, ONE midterm, 2 online writing assignment that counts for 20% total and I think technique in the class? or something like that. Don't forget to TURN IN your writing assignment to TURNITIN. Even tho the old lab helps you figuring out what to do quickly but I wouldn't recommend just copy mindlessly because ultimately, it will cost you the final/midterm grade. Those two tests are fairly difficult only because he asks both the calculation and you really need to know the lab that you do. For example, the stupid pipet video at the start of the class was asked in the final and it got me mad because i lost the easy point. But try to make an outline of the PURPOSE and the TECHNIQUE that you use and WHY YOU USE THEM. trust me, it was on my final and I don't think why he wouldn't give the same to you. But I learnt a lot about being a scientist in his class and how to calculate errors especially: inherent error, RAD, RSD those are pretty fun to do. Pang is not unreasonable, you just need to spend time and effort in this class. Oh, right, PAY ATTENTION to your lab because sometimes the TA is really picky and ALWAYS find something to take points off (and the prelab is mostly 10-15 pts) so it really screws your grade. A is achievable in his class if you spend the appropriate amount and effort.
