Organic chem is a drag, but Dr. Chang makes it fun and bearable. His lectures are fast, but he posts notes that help you follow greatly. Also tests are totally based on the notes and optional homework; he doesnt try to pull a fast one. I dont know why a few hate on him; probably because its their first organic chem class. Generous grading scale allows 20% of the class to get an A. If he teaches an organic chem class, definitely go for him. Chang all the way!

I recommend taking Professor Chang. He is a good lecturer, but he also goes a bit fast during class. The exams were straightforward and Professor Chang told clarified what to study for. He made students feel that they can do well in his class. His humor during lectures were also very enjoyable. Probably I liked the most that Professor Chang spent the majority of the quarter actually writing notes on the board. He did present some power point slides. Overall good professor.

Definitely one of my favorite professors here. After not doing so hot in 30A, I went to Dr. Chang's office hours after the first lecture to ask him how I can get an A in his class. He gave me some really helpful strategies that when combined with hard work ultimately gave me an A- in the course. Dr. Chang somehow makes chemistry understandable, and his sense of humor was the highlight of the class. Highly recommended!!!

I would recommend him. His lectures are understandable, he posts lecture notes online, and his jokes are even funny sometimes. There are no surprises on the tests. You just have to take the time to understand the material and he provides plenty of practice problems. Our grade was determined by two midterms and the final. The average grade in the class was 70%, but the curve was generous.

I took this class during Winter of 2013. Dr. Chang is quite new to teaching which I think is a good think because he still remembers what it is like to be a student.

The course is very fast paced and a lot of reactions are thrown at you starting from day 1 but he breaks the material down very well. Exams are a bit difficult but totally what you would expect for an Ochem class at UCLA.

Practice a lot and go to office hours and the A is yours. and he is hilarious which is always nice.

Dr. Chang is literally one of my favorite profs I've ever had. He's not only hilarious, but he knows his stuff and is amazing at teaching it. Go to his office hours, sit up front, and ask questions often.

First impression someone might have of Dr. Chang is that he goes really fast from the start. You can never seem to be able to put your pencil down (unless he uses slides for at most a week or two). The class pace sped up to the point where we finished the curriculum a lecture or two ahead. What I liked about Professor Chang though was that he was straight-forward. Organic chemistry is a hard enough subject to grasp and how Jonah specifies what to study helps with the learning process. His two midterms and final are DOABLE, especially since he provides the exact same structure of these in the practice papers he gives before the exam day. My advice to anyone who has to take a course with him: definitely keep up. Rewrite the rushed notes you take; do the optional homework, digest; make flashcards for the reagents and mechanisms; and regurgitate the practice exams he gives. Then you should be good. Aside from that, Jonah is a really humorous man and gives a refreshing perspective to learning in lectures.

Dr. Chang is hands down the best and most approachable professor that I have had at UCLA. I took Chem 30B with him and I found it to be extremely challenging, but I put in the effort by attending all of Dr. Chang's office hours and by developing a thorough understanding of the material. Dr. Chang is extremely conscious of what it is like to be a student, which sets him apart from most of the professors at UCLA because I genuinely felt like his goal was to educate the next generation of scientists, as opposed to just teach the class and get back to his research. I ended up doing very well in his class, and developed a personal relationship with Dr. Chang, culminating in a fantastic letter of recommendation and advice for my future.
If you are considering taking a class with Dr. Chang, take it, and put in as much time as you have because while his course is challenging, he will reward you for your effort and he is 100% on the side of the student.
