This class was amazing and Professor Kuntz transitioned to remote learning extremely well. All lectures were pre-recorded and so informative. The textbook is 100% not necessary and I didn't watch all of the films and still ended with an A. He is just such a pure soul and I wish I could take the course in person.

What a legend this man is. Not a single lecture is dull, this man has so much fun teaching this class, you can't help but pay attention. The material is super interesting.

You don't need to attend any of the films for the first half of the course as it's not on the midterm at all, but there are participation discussions in section that you can just read the summary for to get talking points. Second half of the class, you need to watch the films as you will need to write about one for the final. The exams are super straightforward, just free responses to terms and important figures from the material that you will Know For Sure if you just pay attention in class. It's all stuff you'd expect to be covered.

For the papers, I'd say really try to write about something you actually care about so it's more fun. The format of the paper really depends on your TA, I personally loved having Zama Dube, she had incredible insight and focus on representation and diversity in films. I definitely recommend her if you want to focus on that in your discussions.

Overall, I loved this class and it's so worth taking especially with the unit count. Most lectures are over within 2 hours, usually less, so it's not the time commitment you might think it is. Cash money class, this is.

You can totally skim the readings for this class (they are lengthy). The movies are long but if you treat them like movies you get to enjoy instead of like homework, it makes the class so much more enjoyable. He picks some great films and its pretty interesting what they teach you. Easy and low effort.

Super easy class 100% recommend as a GE if needed. Kuntz is such a sweet man and you can really tell he is so passionate about all aspects of film. The content was a bit boring for me personally at times just because it really is history heavy on the origins of movies BUT again super easy overall.

DADDY KUNTZ!! This man. the purest, most beautiful, joyful, passionate, kind soul i have ever had the grace to meet. He is just the sweetest person and he is so so passionate about what he teaches. He knows his stuff- he barely uses notes to lecture... it's just all in his brain. It's so cute how excited he is about film and I can tell it's what truly brings him joy. The way he wiggles down into his seat and smiles like a little boy when a film screening begins is- ah!- SO CUTE. Protect this little old man at all costs. (also yes you should take this class it's incredibly easy and my TA was a queen and I love her- she gave us candy)

By far one of the best classes I have taken at UCLA! The professor is so knowledgeable and passionate about film. This really makes the extra time you have to put in to watch movies worth it! It's also a really cool class to take since we basically go to school in Hollywood.

This class was just a GE for me, but I loved it. The content was interesting and relevant to the essays/exams. The essays gave students the opportunity to write about what interested them, and the exams allowed us to choose what we wanted to write about from a select group. Midterm and final, everything is writing. If you don't like to write essays, maybe you should avoid the class. Though 4 hours seems long, it was worth it for me. The content was interesting, and I was able to see classic films that I had never watched or even heard of before. Also, if you don't want to be alone, your friends can honestly sit in the theatre with you for the class and movie (as long as you're not disruptive), because he doesn't really care.

YOU MUST TAKE THIS CLASS!! Prof Kuntz is the sweetest man ever which made this class so enjoyable. Class consists of 2 research papers, midterm, and final. The midterm and final are the same format - 2 short answer sections and 1 long essay section. I did well on both of them by just notes I took during lecture (they do look for specific details though). There was never any homework. Lecture could be a little long at times but we always watched a movie after class. I didn't buy the book and didn't need it the whole quarter. I had TA Krystal L. and she was great! I 100% recommend this class to everyone.

Prof. Kuntz was great. He is obviously very prestigious and knowledgeable within his field, and his lectures were engaging and informative. The classes are very long, because it is split between lecture and a movie. I usually left before the movie started and watched it later in my own time, but staying for the movie is also a great experience because the class is literally inside of a theatre. TAs can be hit or miss, but if you maintain good communication with them throughout the quarter, you will do fine.

Great class whether you are pursuing a film major/minor or just taking as an elective. Kuntz is really knowledgable about the subject he teaches. His lectures are pretty long and packed with a lot of information but his goofy delivery (in a cute nerdy way lol) makes it bearable. Go to lectures, take good notes, and watch the films regardless (whether you watch it in the theater or online at home) because they will show up on the final.
