Overall I thought this class was very fair. The test questions are similar to the homework and he gives you all the numbers straight up, no word problems. I got a C on the first midterm but was able to pull my grade back up to an A after the second midterm and final. He also can drop your lowest midterm to be only 3% of your grade which is very helpful. Prof. Yanez is also a very clear lecturer. I found that doing the homework right after lecture helped me retain the information best. I'd also highly recommend doing the suggested problems because even though they aren't required they are very similar to what will be on the exams.
Professor Yanez is a very passionate and efficient instructor! He is always positive and tries his best to help all students. He is very organized, as he consistently posts the lecture recordings, notes before and after lecture, and suggested problems. For Math32A I highly recommend you keep up and do the suggested problems the day of or the day after lecture! It's a lot to go over all of them right before midterms. Go to office hours, he's very helpful and will walk through difficult problems with you!
Midterms are very reasonable; keep in mind there aren't that many questions (as the test is only 50 minutes long) and the professor isn't evil and won't put a completely weird question in there.
Amazing professor! I'd take him for all of my math classes if I could.
-He explains things very well and is happy to clarify things in class. He is also always happy to help in office hours and very understanding.
-Has two grading schemes to help you succeed.
-If you understand the homework you should be well prepared for the exams
-He makes the class very interesting and engaging (I really loved the class and enjoyed the material because of how he taught it)
-Posts his class notes on canvas (attendance not required but I'd recommend)
Yanez is the best! Trust me! he is super fair and not mean at all. the first midterm is super easy, the second is little bit difficult but he gives everyone curve immediately making it no harm. he also offers a second scheme, so if you fail one midterm, it's really ok. He is very fair very very, very nice, he tries his best to help us and explains things clear, also sometimes he is funny
Exams: Very fair and reflect what has been taught. He gives plenty of practice problems.
HW: 6 Problems (4 of which are completeness and 2 are correctness).
Lecture: Engaging and compelling lecturer but sometimes you may have to ask for a clarification which he always kindly gives!
Hard class but made manageable!
Absolute GOAT. Tests and homeworks were very fair and reflected course material well. Had a very good way of intuitively explaining more complicated topics before giving formal proofs. Highly recommend this professor.
Prof. Yanez is awesome. He has a slight accent but from my perspective as a native English speaker it doesn't get in the way of understanding what he says. He is very energetic while teaching and if you indicate that you need any sort of help during class or at office hours (which were really helpful), he will go out of his way to make sure you get it. Each lesson he assigns a set of problems from the textbook, but at the end of the week you only needed to submit 2. The material it covers is pretty difficult as expected, but the midterms and final are extremely fair and doable. He was also kind enough to include two markschemes, one that weighs the midterms heavier if you did well on those and one that weighs the final much more and drops one midterm if you didn't do well on one of them.
he is wonderful and very kind, his lectures are always succinct. They were recorded and pretty similar to the textbook, but I would always go because he had a lot more enthusiasm for the subject than just if you were to read it on your own. Homework was always short, he would assign a problem set after every lecture, but really he only made you turn in 2 of them, but even the problem sets that were not required were manageable. His office hours were always helpful as well, and he was always willing to answer any question, overly conceptual or otherwise. He does proofs for certain things in class, but you were never expected to memorize any of them, it was just for understanding or if you forgot a formula or something, which was nice. Tests were always manageable and never unexpected.
